Hi folks, I have an old 1432 Quichita running a Mud-skipper kit with a Predator 420. It is a nice setup for me. I mostly run creeks with a lot of logs and stuff in them. I've had it about a year and haven't duck hunted with it yet but have been fishing with it a lot. I'm amazed at how I can take pretty tight turns with it if I slow down. I have been able to get 12-13mph pretty easy and if I pull up on the handle pretty good, I can get close to 19mph if I open it up on a straight away. In order to help with the performance I built recently a cavitation plate to help keep it from trying to blow out and that made big difference. Late last week I was able to get 15.6 MPH pretty effortlessly without having to pull up on the handle but the prop was diving a little too deep. I've been running a 7.5" prop which I recently broke. I'm curious if anyone has run a similar setup with a larger prop? I'm thinking of trying an 8" or an 8.5" prop. After breaking my 7.5", I installed the 7" that came with my kit and my top speed was 12.9 so I expect going with a bigger prop should help my speed a bit. I did a bit of searching but don't see a lot of info on the mud skipper's here. |

I emailed the customer service team at Mud-Skipper and Jon said if I give them a call he would be glad to work up a kit with the props in the sizes I want. They have always been quick to respond to any questions I have had. I think I will order the 7.5", the 8" and the 8.5" and see how they do. Jon said that he thinks the 9" might be too much prop for my motor. I'll give those sizes a try and let you folks know how it goes. It is really nice not having to worry about beating up my lower unit on my outboard. |

I mount an 8x7 prop with the predator 420 cc motor. It works good on those small jons. Mark F. Cheney |

Thanks Mark, have you tried any other sizes? |

Just 8x6 and the 8x7 was better. I think it gets close to maxing out the 420 motor. Mark F. Cheney |

On those kits, don't use a cav plate! They aren't designed to be used with one! I'll PM you some details of the fix. Out of respect of SPS wishes, I won't post them on the forum. |

thanks reharbert, I looked over your notes and they make sense. I'll try pulling my cav plate off and tweaking my setup. My mud-skipper kit is a little different than the SPS kit. The instructions talk about moving the motor fwd or backward on the mount plate but my plate doesn't have adjustment slots. It does seem I have the mount on backwards. I had seen other comments about mounting with the center pin inside the boat vs outside, I'll try switching it. On their little cavitation tab thing thing they mentioned, I'm not sure that will work for me. I am always bumping logs and stuff, I figure I would just rip that off or at least keep it bent up so bad as to be ineffective. I'll keep tweaking it and report back if I figure it out. |
