Post subject:  round chimes vs square?

Alright guys my last post before I order my skiff...
My last decision is rounded chimes vs square?
16' skiff with 23 longtail...
My skiff will be aluminum
Round bottom will be 16x36
Square will be 16x38

My question is will a square bottom slide with a longtail?
I know they will with a outboard but from my little of experience long tails tend to not plane the hull flat like a surface drive an with the back drafting 3" Im guessing while running 20mph?,
will the back still slide around?

Running rivers to get into the swamps 15 min rides
But idling in 4-10" of flooded timber an cypress swamps
An alot of hard bottom...an yes running slus an established trails in shallow swamps

Have at it guys!

Thanks to all

Unless you're planning on getting boat made that incorporates these somehow...

But I don't think those will affect turning.

Lets not chine in unless we have something constructive to offer guys.

First of all, who ever said sliding was a bad thing to begin with?

Square chines go faster, carry a load better, and track at idle speeds waaay better.

It's a longtail. Sliding is easy to control if you do happen to actually make it happen. Don't over think it, yall.

So square chines all the way is what I'm getting so far..
As far as turning in deep water round an square will be what an what I'm figuring...?

guys, square vs round was started by some welder who wanted to make more money off his boats. it's a gimmick, just like a huntdeck. lol
learn how to drive the boat and it won't matter.
that little 16x38 is gonna carve a turn like a sports car either way.

good luck on whatever u choose.

the real question is why go 16' instead of 18' or 20'. lol

I could turn on a dime with my round chine GD hull and I can slide out of control with my hard chine wooden boat. There IS a difference. I want my boat to slide tho, learn how to control it and the advantages outweigh the cons.

Cb5331 those are clearly tapered chimes you posted a picture of...
I clearly asked about round chimes or square, not tapered.:p

Get a sq one. Then if its not what you thought round it off with a file.

HA hA couldn't resist!

I'm just getting into these things so its all new and fun for me. But on a serious note I would not worry about with a 23 longtail.

I prefer rounded CHINE, rolls off of stumps pretty easy, doesn't bind up in veg near as bad, slides across the mud easier.... I know you know, long tails don't have the thrust a sd has.... So when turning in crazy stuff... Rounded is better... Just plain open water, square

I prefer square chines.

All other things equal....a square chine boat will drafts fewer "s at rest and at WOT it also goes faster 99% of the time.

For me sliding while turning my 18 X 54 cc is never an issue.

Not saying it won't slide but again it is not a big deal once you learn how to drive your boat IMHO. B

At 1 time I had a fiberglass flat with square bottom.
It slid with a out board on it but I got use to it an worked the throttle to work the slide, it's a art like a motocycle in a curve,
But I will soon see the diffrence as a guy that launches with me has a 38" round bottom 16 ' an I will have the same boat but square. I can see this leading up to batman vs superman senerio as we both will have 23hp longtails but mine will be a swomp!
BTW never seen batman vs superman...
