Going with a 15 or 1642 weldbilt crawdad with a backwater longtail. Not real concerned with speed bc im trying to get to places other people cant get to around here, not racing for a spot. Would like as little engine noise as possible which makes me want the honda. But then again i really dont like the idea of not having pull start like the briggs does. Also I know mods are available for the briggs if i'm not satisfied with 23hp. 2 man max with a dog and at the most 3-4 dozen decoys. Wondering if the extra foot is going to help or hurt when turning. I know it will help with load carrying but im told that a 15 foot boat may be a little short for a longtail to actually turn. Very little mud here i just want the long tail for very shallow water and crossing over a lot of tree's. Pretty set on the brand of boat unless somebody can custon build me a .100 gauge boat with longitudinal stringers and an open floor plan for about 2500.

Sounds like you've already made up your mind on a motor.
And the boat sounds good too.
16x40 would probably be the ticket.

I was hoping somebody would tell me the honda had a pull start option lol

I've talked with Jake at length about the Honda vs the Briggs. He says go with the Briggs. I owned a 23 SWOMP and that was a bad little motor. Throw it on that 1642 and roll out!

The Honda is a better built engine, doesn't have the case leak issues. I've owned both, currently have a 23 vanguard.

I think I'd vote for the 23 because of that recoil start option, as well as parts availability...Frank, how hard was that 23 to manually start? I sure wish I had one on my 26.5 EFI BW- I always charge the battery prior to departure but it's good to have that backup. Wonder if they will make a 23 EFI? Is it possible to have a recoil start efi motor?

get the extra foot on the boat. it will help to keep the boat shallower with water displacement. Look for a true flat bottom with the stringers you wanted as well. no need for a smaller hull built for speed with the limited HP you will be pushing. The square front flat bottoms tend to have the most surface area on the water and will keep the boat higher.

I'd also lean towards the recoil start for backup. I had both on an old boat and never needed it, however this year on my new boat (without recoil backup) the starting battery died. Thankfully I had a trolling motor battery on board to swap. was an o-chit situation while it was happening though.

Hey Glades, if your battery is dead, that EFI ain't gonna run either way... pull that rope all you want.

True that! Just fondly reminiscing my last outboard, a Merc short shaft 25, had both electric start and recoil, fast sob!

^yes it makes a big difference, especially on a smaller boat.

Well i waited around and found what I thought was a steal of a deal. 1536 go devil duck skiff with a 23 hp go devil short shaft long tail. Not exactly what I was looking for but after riding around a little I beleve it's everything I wanted. And it was about 7,000 cheaper than what i was going to get lol

Short fast boats turn into short slow boats once loaded down.

If i'm in a hurry I'll break out the tohatsu. But it still planes 3 people and a full tank of gas like its nothing. I'm not gonna ask much more of it. Mostly bc i dont have enough room for anything else lol

Haha 22 downriver with a beat up prop and a carb that needs to be thrown in the trash. Not expecting much more with a good prop but I hope I get my rpms down. 4300 seems a little steep for a stock motor. It was running in between 4100 and 4300. Still needs a little dine tuning. Still wants to blow out at certain speeds.

Those RPMs are fine. The more RPM you run unloaded (within reason) the more you'll maintain with a load which will translate into better speeds all around.

With these little motors, what rpm do the valves start to float then?

I have a 12 & 1\2 ft skiff with a raised rake with 40 inch bottom with a 7 hp Subaru Robin and I had over 500lbs of passengers and it did fine a little slow but got where we were going
