Post Swomp lite 23
Mitch from BW met me yesterday to ride though sparkleberry swamp here in SC. We had a great day cruising the woods. Id have to say that all the hype on the BW is true. Big difference between it and my godevil. In bump and grind they were similar, but turning and ease of use the BW shined. In open water on the long run back to hill it drove better than my 25 yamaha. Could let go of the handle and it stayed right there at WOT. If you are on the fence, give em a try. I get some money saved up ill be ordering a frame from them to put my 23 on. Look on the BW facebook page. Mitch is traveling all over the country giving test drives. Give him a shout if your interested.

I drove the big block EFI when they were down here in Louisiana. Like Phoneman said..,..you can let go of the tiller at WOT and it just stays straight and level. In the mud....it ate.

The shorter shaft made huge difference in the tight turns in the woods

It deff drove different than any longtail ive driven. Didnt vibrate and rattle like my GD. Speed was pretty close. My 23 is on a 1638 and the BW was on a 542 alweld. Mine runs 19ish empty and it was about 20.5. I figured that might have to do with boat weight as that alweld was pretty light. Im prob going to order a frame and put the 23 off my GD on it and try it. I can always sell the frame i dont like or slap a predator engine on GD frame and guve me an excuse to build a boat for it

Post Re: Swomp lite 23
I have not regretted my BW 26.5 efi purchase! The two negatives aired here before, and with which I concur, are the tiller handle, which, for me, could have a better rise as I am 6'4", and the back-weighted motor/frame versus GD or the others which are more neutrally balanced. I moved my motor to the back-most swivel point to move it forward, even with the inboard mounted versa mount. This has made it easier to push down and get the prop out of the water to achieve neutral or start the motor. :ugeek: This might be the fact I have the motor on a 1648 grizzly transom, which is a rough compromise, and I know the motor would perform better on a true flat bottom hull. The shorter 59" drive does make it easier to execute turns. There is indeed, less vibration and better planning for the most part, and mud/veggie running is comparable to my previous experiences with both GD and MB longtails. In a little over a year, I have used much less grease and the efi starts up directly and I have noted improved fuel efficiency. After 40 hours I switched to synthetic oil and grease. I remembered to Loctite the cavitation plate screw bolts after many trials with the supplied shims. CS has been superb!

I noticed like glades said it didn't seem to be as easy to come out of the water as my godevil. Which can be good and bad I guess. I drive more in open water but need the MM for stumps and a little shallow stuff with a bit of grass thrown in, Not really much mud. I'm use to kinda squatting some anyway when I run it standing up. Most of the time though, I run sitting down until I get in anything rough. I'll probably order a frame and give it a try on my godevil boat. I would have loved to have been able to put that one on my boat and run it for the weekend. Now to just decide between the lite and the regular one. Mitch said for me, the lite would prob be the best.

They have a new SWOMP lite coming out this summer in a 35HP 37EFi that I'm waiting for. I'm hoping to put it on my 91 Lake raider 1648 with a 20" transom. I'm thinking the 71" shaft will work best.

I think you are right, the longer drive would be better on the high transom. The weight difference, for example, on the 23 lite and 23 swomp is only 15 lbs. according to BW's listings. I would think the proposed new lite version 35/37 HP would be about the same versus the swomp 35/37. In my mind negligible. When Jake first suggested the versa mount for my 26.5 efi I was skeptical, having always used the conventional clamp on style on previous longtails. It was only a bit more difficult to install, but he was right as far as the best fit for my 1648 grizzly and avoiding the "whitewater" wash coming from my hull. You are best to ask BW about the best fit and performance motor combo with your hull. For me, the shorter 59" "reach" is compensated by the shorter turning radius, and it works real good with my 16" transom. I have yet to hear of an issue with the reduced bracing on the lite version motors versus the regularly braced frames. My decision on the 26.5 versus the 35/37, was both less price and the reality that at 63 I usually hunt by myself or just one other hunter and I don't need the extra horses/weight/cost/ drive effort. Good luck on your purchase!

I thought the lite would not be tough. We drove it through some nasty stumps and stuff here in our swamp and it handled it great. One is deffinitly in my future.

Uh, you know you're going to need to start by tearing it down to fix/replace bearings and seals right?
I'm guessing that they'll happily sell you some bearings, seals, etc. and ship them the same day, but in an effort to possibly HELP YOU get up and running the same day or to save you a few bucks shipping, they are offering you a expeditd solution like picking up a couple pretty readily available parts from a local auto parts/ag store or bearing supply house.
As a business owner, I'll often tell past customers where they can get replacement cabinet parts from directly cash and carry that I'd have to mark up to cover shipping costs and overhead. In an effort to save us both time and better serve them. I've gotten similar feedback of "not being helpful and passing them off", so, I can see where you may feel like they passed you off without actually helping, but it's them not taking advantage of your immediate need for a few parts to make a buck when you should be able to easily grab locally without the wait and get you back on the water with the least downtime.
For what it's worth, If you are running a lot of saltwater and you enjoy pushing your equipment hard (as do I) I'd grab a an extra seal and three bearings while you're out and keep them in your tool kit in a ziploc.
Good Luck!

Well since my post rattled your cage so much let me ask you a question, Would you drain the oil out of your truck and throw out the old filter BEFORE you buy a new filter and oil to replace it with? Didn’t think so. All I needed was a size or part number. I would have even ordered from them. I don’t care where there parts come from, I just need the parts. As a matter of fact, the first place I looked was on Backwaters website but the only bearings they have available on their site are sold as a kit. As a business owner myself, I answer straight forward questions with straight forward answers and offer assistance when needed.
