Post 37 swomp lite on 16/44 gatortrax??
Currently have a 2006 16/44 gatortrax. Short transom and no huntdeck. I believe it was originally built for a longtail. Now running a 26.5 kohler efi full frame bw ss swomp. It runs 19.5 with just me, pirogue, and hunt load. When I put another Hunter and and his gear it will run 16-17. I am considering a 37 swomp lite. Any idea of speeds for my solo setup as well as with another Hunter? Would it be a lot better for carrying a load? Also, what length is recommended? I have been happy with the kohler 26.5 efi ss swomp setup just, as always, looking for more speed. Would it be worth the expense and trouble? Just starting the deliberation process so any opinions are welcome. Thanks in advance.

I think frank is the only one here who’s got one so far but it looked like he was getting pretty good speeds. Definitely better speeds both empty and carrying a load but you could hang a surface drive off that no problem and see even better gains.

FAST. That would be your approximate speed. I know people are going to laugh and that's fine but with just an average size guy in the boat, you'd be outrunning a lot of SD rigs. I won't get the chance to GPS my rig again until next weekend at the earliest (2/10-2/11). I am expecting 27, maybe 28 mph. For anyone who has been around my rig here in Tennessee or saw the rig Arlon has been running, they know what these big block SWOMP Lites are all about. They are straight runners.

That being said, you are going to be limited in load carrying ability because of your hull size. If the biggest load you haul is 2 guys and gear, I don't think it would be worth it to get a new hull though.

Arlon's rig easily runs 26-27 with two people and a light load. When we went to my camp together, I stayed just out of the corner so that I didn't leave them behind. My rig was running 28-29 back then.

Frank, please let us know the speeds you see when you get a chance to measure them. I have come to like the longtail. I'm 55, so for now I can put out the extra effort to drive them. I may switch to a sd in 10 years or so. I'd mostly be hunting solo, so those speeds would be fantastic. I do occasionally take one other person with either 2 pirogues and no boat blind or boat blind and no pirogues. As far as getting a new hull, I'd rather try to stick with what I have. For me, it seems the right size for the number of people I hunt with.

Any ideas of the length of the swomp lite I'd need?

Thanks for the advice.

How tall is the transom? That determines your length. I'm also looking at the 37 lite setup but need to find a bank to rob first.

It's a short transom. I believe 16". It was originally made for longtails in 2006.

I would bet the shorter shaft is your choice. Jake from backwater is super helpful and nice and will answer whatever questions you have.
