Is it just me or what? I have had my backwater 35 for almost a year now and am really impressed with what it can do! Does it steer hard because it’s a 35? I do reshim a lot due to load changes and fight blow outs, but it’s a handful compared to my buddies 22 swomp. He sits down and uses one hand to operate. I usually have to stand and use 2 hands. Is there anything I can do to help?

Something is off. Definitely shouldn't take 2 hands to steer. I've owned a 23 SWOMP and a 35 SWOMP and there's honestly not much, if any difference, especially once you're running on plane. Another thing is the shimming for different loads... I'm almost positive that shouldn't be necessary. At least I never had to re-shim any of my Backwater motors on either of my boats because I may or may not have been hauling a heavy load.

For me the bigblock longtails drive nice when straight but turning takes some patience. You've had a year with it so you are used to it. The only LT I know of that really turns is a smallblock on a light cheapy 1648. The bigblock is usally mounted on a bigger boat and you feel it when turning

I just saw you have the same boat a Frank. So whatever he says will be good info

It’s the long shaft on a 20” transom Alweld 1752. I need to take some time and get the shimming right. I have the motor in the middle pivot hole, versa mount is mounted outside the boat. With it being so low that it rubs the top of the transom. Driving straight doesn’t seem to be as difficult but definitely turning is... I thought maybe it was just the nature of it. Also my prop is a 9x8 and I’m hitting the rev limiter. Jake said to try a 10x5 through them at backwater. Anyone have any experience with that prop?

I run a 10x6 hex prop on my 37. I can't remember what prop I ran on my 35.

I noticed today after loading the boat, my self has a slight bend in it and a cracked weld. I now know why it won’t run straight!!! I’m going to straighten it and re weld and see what happens. I also plan on ordering the 10x5 prop soon.

I have a 35 backwater and have ran it since 2014. Easiest LT I have ever ran. I also ran the 10x5 prop. The downfall of the larger prop is if you run in stumps or heavy trash water, be careful or you will break a shaft since you will hit more objects below the water. You can always upgrade to the larger shaft but you must change out bearings and u joint. I first ran mine on a 1748 but have ran it on a 1852 the last couple of years. Can drive it sitting down with one hand!

It actually broke and bent now that I think about it when I was backing up a while back and motor bounced down and I kept on backing. It has nothing to do with the product! It’s a wonder to as I drive a chevy! it’s not too bad and may not be the culprit but I’ll fix it for sure. Other than that the motor is a beast and every time I think I want to sell it I take it out and I’m amazed at what it can do!!! Thanks for all the help and info!

And this one time in band camp! I was headed to my favorite duck hole when my 1964 Evinrude 18 hp Fastwin on a 1972 Appleby 14x42 hit a stump. Had to get out in knee deep water and change out the sear pin. It took almost 10 minutes!!! That's went I realized there has got to be a better way. First came props with pressed in rubber hubs/no sear pin, then the expensive stainless props. I may not have been there and done all of it, but I have seen a lot. You guys are lucky! Hell back in band camp we had to use "lead" shot with fixed choke shotguns!!! Had a damn point system for duck limits, so somebody had to be able to do simple math and ID a duck not just ID and count.

Cypress, good story! I know some of the "young'uns" here had a mud motor first, unlike the veterans. That old 25 Evinrude of mine on that beat up French settlement, La. 1436 was rude, and I paid a lot in repairs and you could not go in a straight line, the prop continually being fouled by weeds, and if the motor stopped peeing, well you were risking it all. When you could run it flew fast as shit, but I don't cuss much anymore after my first 18 HP GD longtail I never looked back.
To get back on the thread topic, took a while to dial in my 26.5 Backwater, but Jake at BW sure helped and was right on with the inboard mounting of the versa mount!
As much as I welcome craft beer, I don't refuse an ice cold PBR!

Definitely not a quality issue! I want to buy a small setup for our restricted lake
