Gave Jake some money today to reserve a new alweld 1648 ssmb with pods and the new 40hp efi. He’s expecting his shipment of new boats around April 9th, I’m pretty excited for this setup, should be a fun little rig! Being that I’m only about a little over an hour from backwater here in mn, and we still have between 2 and 4 feet of ice on our lakes, I’ll have to get out on the river when it comes in.

Lows in the single digits this week, currently dumping 8 to 12 inches of snow. Winter isn’t giving up in the north country!

There are places to run. I’m just south of you and was out last weekend.

Hit the Mississippi if nothing else. Can’t let a new rig sit in the garage.

Trying to find the specs on the motor...is it also a Kohler? Weight much different from the 37 efi?

I talked to Jake again today, now the truck load of boats pushed back from next week to sometime the following week. The wait continues.

I’m going to buy a 40 this summer. I’m concerned about the durability of the light frame. The old style frames look a lot more rugged than the lite models. Can anyone comment on this? Also I’m going to use an outboard in the summer and the mud motor for hunting. Will the holes I have in the transom for the outboard (Mercury) interfere with the holes needed for mounting the light or old style frame?

Thanks

New frame seems plenty stout. Here's a post from their Facebook last week

The larger diameter shaft should offset the lack of a U joint; from the pics Frank posted of the 37 lite, that frame looks very sturdy. Too soon for me to morph, my 26.5 swomp is only two seasons old....but it is solid so far...

Hopefully more reviews will be coming out soon, I wonder how much performance gain will be had from the 37 to the 40

Just changed my older BW frame for the new SWOMP LITE frame Saturday....i didnt think it was possible to beat the older frame....but I was wrong....the new frame and bigger prop are awesome....took it out for a test drive yesterday......all I can say is DAMNIT man......speed is up....no vibration at all...handles like a dream...newly designed cav plate along with all the adjustments available on the transom mount make all this possible.....Very Impressed...Great job Arlong,Jake, Larry and all the guys at BW...cannot wait to get this back in the water!!!!!

jafman65, what HP motor you got? You mean I can retrofit my 26.5 onto a lite frame? Glad to see Backwater updated their website and have both the 37/40 lite motors listed! If the lite frame makes it better, I just may have to morph soon! Maybe I can convince my wife I have to drive to Minnesota this summer to move the ringnecks south!

The Lite frame for the 35/37/40 is also the same frame used for the 26.5

Once again, thank you, Frank! Those extra horses are tempting but usually it is only me or one other hunter- I can also carry three hunters and gear though it is much slower, but I always get an extra early start. I do like the idea of upgrading the 26.5 to a lite drive and getting the most performance from it.

Glades Ranger...I have a 35 Vanguard that is 5yrs old...went from a built up transom height of 21 inches on the older classic frame to the recommened 16 inch transom with the Swomp Lite frame. Between the more shallow angle entry to the water and bigger prop, I am more than pleased...it jumps up and is gone...I know a longtail cannot compete wit the surface drives for speed but BW has certainly closed the gap some....I can only imagine the 40hp on there.... got to work on the wifey before I get a 40 but eventually it will happen.

Post subject:  Re: New backwater 40 coming my way!

The 35 is certainly powerful. Transom height is a big deal of course. My mentor in longtail running suffered a couple of years with a tall transom and finally cut it down. I began with his 18 HP GD on a 1436 back in '86. He morphed to a 35 MD SD and he had all kinds of issues with it...the sand/marl down here shaves props in no time. The benefit of an LT is you bottom out before you ruin the prop. I am most happy hovering near 20 mph most of the time, plenty fast enough for me. I just turned 64 and can handle the 26.5 HP ok but I know it won't get any easier in the future...of course the lite frame just might make it so...wish I could turn back the clock but I ain't complaining. Glad that Backwater is the "vanguard" now, pushing the longtail envelope and producing the new paradigm.

Went out for a little bit last night, pretty empty boat with just me, a battery and a full 6 gallon gas tank. Ran Just shy of 4500 rpm i touched 28 mph, in a foot to 4 feet of water. The setup comfortably ran around 24 to 25 at about 4000 rpm. I think it will run a little better by getting some of the weight in the front, at wide open if i wasnt lifting up on the handle pretty hard the front end started to bounce pretty good. Overall im super happy with the whole setup, and that 40 hp is a hell of a runner. I think with a little fine tuning and some more run time it will be even better!

I was able to advance the throttle on my 26.5 efi to c. 4400 rpm- according to my Tiny tack..just past that the motor would bog down- somebody here stated the internal limiter on the efi was 4500 rpm? But that tweak might get you an extra 1-2 mph?

Post subject:  Re: New backwater 40 coming my way!

Glades, saw your post about getting 4400 RPM from your 26.5 EFI. According to the service manual, the internal Rev limiter of the coiIs ( I assume) are set at 4500 RPM. It is on page 30 of the service manual that you can download from KOHLER'S site. I am curious what tweak you made to the throttle. I know that the engine also has a mechanical Governor that you can raise by tightening the governor spring. Is that the change that you made to get the higher RPM?

Post subject:  Re: New backwater 40 coming my way!

Replaced the machined screw with a longer one- that pushes the throttle plate farther and thus more rpms...now that figure of 4400 rpm is out of the water not under load.
