That's exactly the reason I'm going with an 18 footer.. I've seen Catahoula lake get just as nasty as the river does and maybe a little worse when it's real high. I just don't understand how people feel safe going down big water in smaller boats with short sides. Heck I've wished for a bigger boat at times in a 21 foot bass boat with a 250..

Also that crab pot buoy is a good idea.

I talked to the Coast Guard COTP and his deputy yesterday, and they said there were a total of four capsized or swamped duck boats in that area Sunday. He said the guy in the PD boat had been picked up by another mariner before the boat was found, so they didn't tie up any resources in a search. There was another group of hunters that went down in Barataria Bay that had to be rescued also. I haven't seen anything on the news about that one. The highlight for the weekend was 3 guys fishing in an EIGHT FOOT johnboat along the Ponchartrain Causeway that went down. EIGHT FEET, 3 men, Lake Ponchartrain, 30 kt winds... I didn't ask if they were using cane poles, but I think we can all safely assume.

They darn near die and they are worried about a bag of decoys? :o . They need to find some humility and maybe a little religion too.

Yeah it was yellow. I didn't see the canoe but I heard there was one. I wonder how they got back up. A guy paid me $400 one time to take him to the end of SW pass, I got to the end, drifted into the gulf, said here it is and he said Awesome, we can go back now...

The canoe and kayak folks hitched a ride back upriver from someone with a powerboat. That'd be a heck of a trip.

$400 for a round trip ain't bad money if the weather's good! Fella must have wanted to see what it looked like beyond the End of the World. The past two years I've seen a fella in a huge canoe with a big dog paddling down there at the end of duck season. The first year I saw him I was a little worried when he asked about going up Raphael Pass to start back upriver. That'd be a heck of a tough current, don't have a clue how he makes it back.
