 Re: Favorite deer hunting caliber/catridge
My first centerfire rifle was a Remington 788 in .243. I wish I knew how many deer that thing dirt rolled through my teenage and early 20's. Dad told me when I bought it, "Son, if you can see it, you can kill it with a .243." That theory was put to the test with the last deer killed with that rifle.....a doe in George West, TX in 1991. Held crosshairs level with the top of her head and over her front leg. 80 grain Remington Core-lokt hit that deer where the brown turns to white. The heart looked like it was cut in half with a dull butter knife....totally ripped it in half. 40 yards and it was on the ground. We guesstimated 24" of bullet drop and figured it to be about a 600 yard shot. Far enough out that I saw the bullet impact through the scope as the shoulder/chest gelled....then heard it. I'd like to say that was skill....but, I know otherwise.
I have another .243 that was my dad's. Also have a myriad of other calibers these days that I probably choose over the .243.... Why? Who knows? But, they all have kills to their credit...probably the 7 mm mag has more than any of the others (except that .243)...either my .270 or 25-06 prolly run a close second to the 7 Mag....only because my son likes to shoot the 7 mag.

Funny thing is the girl he is referring to is a member of MMT and is 23 years old. She would not be all too happy to read these post.

 Re: Favorite deer hunting caliber/catridge
Back to cartridges. If I needed to shoot my best shots for competition, I would bring my 300 win mag. I've never owned a gun that shoots as accurate as that one does. My 7mm08 is for foot plots with short shots. The small gun makes it easy to maneuver around and the impact of my 300 is not needed

 Re: Favorite deer hunting caliber/catridge
Buy one, then save up and buy another. After a while you may get into bowhunting, who knows? A lot to be said for the availability and attributes 30-06 and .308 being in every town you may find yourself hunting. There is no right answer, just pick one or five and be happy.- Merica!!! If you want opinions here's mine- .300 win mag. bolt gun with the best glass money can buy and what it takes to be 100% confident and fluid shooting. I have most of the other calibers mentioned and they are all great and will do the job well. Mostly I'm just grateful to live here and be able to enjoy the hobby. There's also some great sentiment to this gun even though it's a very basic custom gun, it came from a great friend and mentor who taught me most of what I know about loading, hunting and shooting. .300 works on everything, has 1000 yard capability, widely available ammo and reloading components if needed. My go to rifle for whitetail and even though it's slight overkill (Never had to look too hard for a dead deer). I'm confident from a few yards to kills out past 600 yds. If I'm on the trip of a lifetime or hunting something I'm only going to get to do a handful of times, it means I'm using a gun I'm 100% used to and comfortable with and not fumbling with something slightly different and possibly costing me a rare/expensive opportunity. In a busy year I may take 10-15 shots with that rifle including range time and hunting, so bullet/loading cost and barrel life are not a consideration.

 Re: Favorite deer hunting caliber/catridge
I am about to add a jewel trigger to my 300. I have also been thinking about getting an 8mm necked down to a 7mm for another long range round. My uncle has one and it is bad to the bone. Expensive as hell for cartridges though

 Re: Favorite deer hunting caliber/catridge
300 win mag necked down to .284. it is nasty bad. You can shoot 7mm Weatherby mag in a pinch.
