With November approaching fast and my lake completely choked off, it has me wondering if anyone has heard of an update on a cure for salvania? I haven't seen much attention on it lately, almost seems like their giving up on a solution.

u r prettymuch screwed. it took me 3 sprayings to get is halfazz under control on my duckpond. it grows back quick.

It grows so dam fast. In the last 3 weeks caddo has gone from looking pretty good after all the flooding this spring to covered up with it today. Spraying and the weevils haven't done any good

It grows stupid fast. They drain the lake I hunt every year before season. It sucks but helps a little bit. Last year we had so much rain none if it could dry and die, also the timber is to tight for it to wash out real good from the floods.
WILL my mom was on Karnak yesterday and told me all the boat roads are filling up with it. It's a sad sight to see.

Do they spray diquat for it? It's an aquatic herbicide I used to use on the golf course bc if you spray non aquatic plants with it, they die in about three hours.

I spray diquat mixed with roundup mixed with 2-4-D.

Isn't diquat a glysophte based herbicide? If so mixing with 2-4-d is a waste of money in a sense. Was told by guy at LSU that they react to another and essentially the 2-4-d is ate up. Basically better off with one or other.

Diquat is not too much different than Paraquat.... Aka "agent orange"

It doesn't matter what they spray, they don't have the man power to spray it enough. Around here the only lakes that will get sprayed are ones that create revenue. They don't care about the smaller back water swamps. They just drain them and call it good for a few months.

Spraying will kill it... But if you miss that one little patch hanging around cypress trees or caught up in the cattails, it's just gonna reproduce. if you don't kill 100% of it, it's not gone. Talked to a fella that sprays for a helicopter service , he says spraying is waste of time and money because those helicopters cant spray in all those tight spots or like I described already . But the state feels like they "have" to do something and right now spraying is the only thing they putting money into..

Now.. The weevils. I got to see first hand work in our marsh. We don't have freezing temps (maybe once a year. Maybe) so I think they do well .
In May or June. 2 out of 3 of our ponds were locked up with salvinia .No open water. we literally moved salvinia that had weevils on it into our ponds.. Late July we started seeing patches of open water and dead salvinia floating .. Went back mid August, and one pond is cleared up 95% and one pond is about 50% clear
Going tomorrow to see what's left after all the high water we've had.
I wish there was more funding for the weevil nurseries , I'm a believer

What happens when the weevils decimate the salvinia and then decide they enjoy eating a nearby crop ?

They die in the winter. Supposedly they dont eat anything but the salvania and if theres none nearby, they crawl on land and get eaten by fireants. That what the biologist told us anyway.

Plenty of other invasive plants we could use some help with, such as alligator grass, hydrilla, and water hyacinth, but they don't eat any of that shit.

GatorGlide that is all...............................not really. That shit is so prolific its damn near impossible to kill or control. The spaying of this shit is killing the bottom about as fast as it. In the long run what’s worse? Think it best to find ways to live with and use it. ….leads me back to GatorGlide, that is all!

Frog, have to do something. It covers the surface, keeps light from penetrating, dies, decays and creates a layer on the bottom that prevents other stuff from growing that ducks like to eat. It's not ideal to kill it, but better than it just taking over completely.

Gator glide definitely comes in handy, but it can also put you in a bind. The lake I hunt has almost a mile stretch of it that's almost 8 inches thick. I've slid a couple hundred yards out into it then had to fight for an hour to get back out. All that being said, I need to order some more G2. I love the stuff lol.

well the salvinia is almost gone at our place, still some floating but it looks to be all dead. And that's what I was told also, if they don't have anymore to eat they'll crawl on land and get eaten.
The pond that had it the worst is wide open now, no lillies, widgeon grass, coon grass.... Nothing! Like a desert floor. Chokes everything out, unbelievable

They have tried weevils with no success in our area. I believe they work in a smaller more controlled environment but not on a large scale area with different variables.

Our area has giant salvinia. I guess they need to quadruple the amount of adults used in the lakes, they've done nothing noticeable in the past years.
