...............ok , so I jumped off the bus at a truckstop in west Monroe right off of I-20. It was late at night and dark and rainy but not too cold so I decided to satchel up my duffel bag and head on down the road. Back in those days you could get a pretty good peice of road behind you just hitchin from exit to exit and walkin a little. Usually met some pretty nice folks too. I was a country boy from Aintry and hadn't seen much yet past the doobie brothers experience so I didn't expect much bad from folks and tried to mind my manners. I had gotten a pretty good way east in a few hours and as day began to break it started to rain pretty hard. Luckily I was at a bridge over what I would late find out was bayou laforche. I eased up under the abutment and poked around with a stick to make sure there weren't no snakes then I plopped down my duffel and stretch myself down right there in the clay dust and took a nap.
It must have been sometime afternoon and I awoke with someone pokin me in the ribs with a sharp stick. A tall lanky fella with a fresh beard and deep smooth voice was sayin," hey boy....hey there.....you alive ?". I was pretty hazy but I remember seein a beat up river John pulled up on the bank of the bayou and this fella with cut-off sleeves and a big dip of snuff and bein a little scared but more intrigued. There was another one with him.......a big black one.......real black and lookin at him I could just tell he couldn't talk to good but he didn't look mean. " what's your name boy.........where you from.........and what in the world are you doin here under this bridge?", said the lanky one as he spat a big mouthful of snuff on the ground and reached in his pocket for a tin of Copenhagen to start the ritual of packin the snuff with his index finger poppin the can before opening it up and pinchin a fresh rub to place gently between his cheek and gum. "uh ?.....B. M. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,my name is B.M. Barrelcooker and I'm from Aintry.............Aintry ,Ky". The Lanky one said," Lawd have mercy boy.........this river ......bayou........it don't go to Aintry. You've done tookin a wrong turn." then he spit in the dust again and laughed a big hearty laugh........................

.......So I couldn't help but ask what these fellas was doin up here on this bayou and pokin me with a stick. The Lanky one says ," we runnin our fish traps......we got nets all up and down this bayou."
and the long to short of it is that I ended up spendin the day with these two dudes haulin up nets and cullin catfish in the oversized river jon. We had a big time talkin and swappin huntin tales and such that it kind of made me homesick.

It was getting late in the day and we were tired but had a hog trough full of nice blue cats , when the lanky one aksed me if I knew who Jesus was. I told him that I new a dude by that name but he pronounced it Hay Suse that helped us set up the speakers at one of the shows in Albuquerque. So he went on to tell me about how I had fell short of perfection and needed a saviour and really needed to get borned again. It all made perfect sense and I didn't have nothin to loose so I signed up to for the program right then and there. He pulled that old john boat back up under the bridge I'd slept under the night before...cut the engine and said a big long powerful soundin prayer then we jumped in the mud stained water and and he baptised me right then and there. And all my sins was washed away....right on down bayou lafourche into the Ouchita and then the Black river and into the Red before slippin into the Mississippi just north of Baton Rouge before floating gently into the Gulf of Mexico . I felt good even though I was ringin wet. I told the guys thanks and I appreciated the day in the boat.
The lanky fella handed me a little paper sack and said," young man you may just need this where you are goin." " thanks ", I said and pushed their boat back into the current and climbed up the bank to my duffel bag under the bridge abutment.
I built a small fire out of some of the driftwood layin around ..wrung out my clothes and settled in for the night. As I sat there looking at the flame I felt happy, real happy for the first time in a long time. I opened up the wrinkled paper sack and pulled out a big chunk of bologna that I put on a stick to warm over the fire..............and a little wooden duck call.

I woke up the next morning to a warm sunny day and started hitching to Birmingham. Birmingham got really interesting...............

I've fished and rode around under that bridge a many of times.

Quick question. Was it a canal then or was it an old bayou?

Very odd how small this world is!!

Post subject:  Re: I don't know where to start.....

It was the bayou. I helped redo the deck on the canal bridge a few years later when I was workin for the James gang ( T.L. James ) out of the Ruston office.
That was back in the day when you could jackhammer a deck in cutoff jeans and high top tennis shoes.
We used to work all day and then go eat crawfish and beer at a place called frank and Janes in west Monroe.

Good times.
