 Re: Anyone know ballistics?
If I was going to buy a rifle for long range deer I would buy a 7 STW.

 Re: Anyone know ballistics?
Ugh. Nice round, not the most pleasant to shoot without a brake.

 Re: Anyone know ballistics?
I've shot a .308 all my life, I have had other calibers but this is what I prefer. I load 150 gr nosler accubond and they do well. There's nothing like short action satisfaction from a .308.
I finally found the right recipe for my factory model 700 tactical.

 Re: Anyone know ballistics?
6.5 Creed is also a short action round chambering, not sure why that's an issue anyways.
Most of the issues with the 6.5 CM has to do with availability. There is limited factory ammo availability in 6.5 CM, but seeing as how it was spearheaded by Hornady, their loadings are very good options. There's also a real lacking of large-scale factory rifles chambered for it.
.308 Win is a really overrated cartridge IMO. The BC's of .30 Cal don't get all that whippy until ~200grains and the .308 doesn't have the ass to get those big bullets moving more than 2500 fps.
In my opinion, the 6.5 Creedmoor is a great chambering. It is going to give you excellent BC's in a 140 gr bullet, muzzle velocities up near the 2900 fps mark, and has excellent barrel life.
They're good paper killing calibers, but not great for hunting. Pigs, sure, but not any elk or pronghorn that you may want to use the rifle for later. The 6.5x284 Norma will give you similar ballistics as the 6.5 CM but will give you the equivalent of a magnum loading. Also worth noting, the trusty 7mm Rem Mag is a great option with a 195 gr VLD. Lots of factory options in both ammo and rifles. You will have to give up the short action though.
The way I would do it if I were you would be to buy a good solid factory .308 (i would opt for M700, but that's my preference) and shoot the piss out of it while it's cheap. I would either get one with a decent stock or buy one for it (Bell and Carlson, McMillan, etc), get your optics all squared away, get a decent trigger in it, and start getting a little reloading spread together. Once you've got that good, order yourself a nice barrel and have a gunsmith true up your action and bolt and install the new barrel chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor. You'll have a great gun and won't get too deep into it too fast if you change your mind.
