Yeah the 8 beaver that day offically broke our familys 31 year record of 7 in one day.. We only run about 15 traps all footholds so its not like we have 100 sets out. It was sweet to finally beat it.

I run a few footholds but mostly 330's. It's been awhile since I have seen one of that size. The wolves up here have been putting a hurting on the local population. Ya also got a couple nice black ones in that pile aslo.

Fowl you putting up your fur? That big sucka will take a sheet of plywood to pull him out good. I have been plunking a few coon and beaver myself this winter. Hitting coon with bucket sets, beaver with 330's and #5 double long springs. Got a few snares out too.
You ever snare coyote using beaver carcass? Helluva attractant. Nice beaver and good colors. Good job! Netman

Netman.... I don't flesh and stretch no more they just don't pay us anything for doing it.. I will rough skin all my beaver mainly to get out the castors. I do put up all my rats and mink. other than that like coon and beaver just gets rough skun and frooze.. I would love to use beaver carcas but its illeagal in WI to use it..I never tried snaring yet it does look fun. I mostly run all footholds for beaver I love the #4 and #44.. also baught a few of the new MB750 beaver traps and they are awesome. You ever run any Dog proof coon traps they work pretty awesome especially near barns where theri may be a dog or cat

fowl have you ever sold your fur at NAFA? I put up all my fur and then send up to the NAFA auctions. That is sumthing that you can't use beaver for coyote??? For info only you can take your carcass and put it in the back of your truck. Go down the road and find a brushy/sticker bush spot. Stop and back your truck 90 degrees into the bush for about 30-40ft. Pull back and forth packing the grass and brush down basically laying a trail. Throw the beaver carcass out the back of the truck and pull back out onto the road. Drop two snares on each trail spread out far enough to keep caught animals from fighting each other. As coyote/fox walk down the road they smell the beaver and like all animals they walk down the path of least resitance and wa la you will have mr coyote waiting on you. Great sets for this time of the year as food is getting a little harder to find.
I have used dog proofs and even made a bunch myself for trapping ditch banks and barns near non target species. I use to get on trapperman.com alot and was building my own dog proofs back couple years ago when they were getting popular. I run alot of bucket sets for coon when I have time from fishing to set them. When I was trapping alot and fishing less I ran snare lines for coon and coyote. Now I just trap around the house to keep in touch. Packing two yr old beaver out was once nothing now its a full work out. I'm getting soft running nets and not traps. A dozen buckets with 220's and a chunk of carp is as easy as it gets.
Your coon and beaver are some of the best in the US. I'm proud for you and your trapping skills.

Thankks netman.. I would love to learn to run snares more and wish we could use the carcass to do so..I could make a killing selling the beaver carcass to bear hunters if it was legal. Up hear also unless a 220 is in a cubby set or full enclosure you can't use it on dry land has to be a like a 160 or the new 180.. I guess for dog purposes. We sold to NAFA a couple times when my grandpa was a big fur buyer we always went to the auction. Now that he is gone we have a local buyer that treats us well and keeps me in the loop about prices and how the market is looking.. Like last week I called in beaver price and he said hang on to them for a little cause the market is going up.. Nice to have a guy like that.

Have a buddy in Ky that traps them and loves it... Except when he finds the ones that are still alive (playing dead) he said they can be a handful!!

Great shots BTW !

Fowl what are the beaver, coon and muskrat prices right now? Just ball park as I know every hide and location is different. Due to higher fuel cost usually fur goes up due to lack of numbers. 160's make good bucket set traps. When we get warm spells during the winter I put bucket sets around big den trees. Gotta get the grinners thinned out then the heavy fur coons come along. I caught a couple big carp in my nets and have chunked them up for bucket sets. Ol yellow carp have been the doom of many a coon. Fowl you over on Trapperman.com?

Netman.. Yeah Im on Trapperman I go on as B.C trapper.. I called last week to my fur buyer and he told me kinda ball park that rats where about 9.50 to 10. and Beaver where around $30.00 plus I sell the castors so that ups the price of each beaver a little bit. Coon was about a 15 dollar average maybe 25 for a top.. Mink is about $26 for a large male. Its hard to beat any fresh fish for coon.. on the new DPs i have been using marshmellows and a squirt of fish oil around the trap... works like a charm

Actually I have made some hot dogs outta them and they are really good... As far as running connibears I;m not a huge fan.. at least not for beaver other animals deffinelty but I can catch more and alot bigger beaver running my footholds.. It may take me longer to set them but the size of the animals are larger.. I would rather have 25 beaver that are blankets or super blankets instead of 100 mediums..

Rat prices are back to the prices I got when I was a kid. As far as big beaver we can put 330s right in the den holes. Sooo.... However I really like snares for beaver as my main go to set. I have a pile of #5 double longsprings and a pile of #3s coils I use for bevers also. I have 10' steel drowning rods with one ways on them that I use for all of my footholds and some snare sets. Those drowning rods are slick and easy to use. Some of my pack in areas I just use snares. Right now I'm really mad at fish however I have a couple beavers on the river that their time is running out because they are up river and all their cuttings are going down river into my gill nets jinking them up. I am battling backyard beavers too. My slough runs a half mile behind my home and starts in my backyard. It is a harbor for them however they must remain on alert at all times. Most of the backyard beavers are two year olds that have been pushed out. The biguns are on the creek behind my property. That is where the big blankets are worked over.

Thats the reason I run mostly footholds we are trying to target the larger beaver that have wnet on their own and are away from the house.. If I want to stritctly go for numbers I put 330 in the bank dens and set near the feeders, but in my experience you seem to get alot of the small ones a large one hear and their. I haven't tried snares but heard they do work alot better then the 330.. I just think for how large some of these runs get and how big some beaver get a 330 isn't enough. I'm going to set for some rats under the ice saturday...with prices where they are I can't afford not too
