Post Shoulders surgery
Any of you guys had to go under the knife for a shoulder injury? I'm going on a month from hurting mine at work and it's getting worse. At first it just hurt when I got it above shoulder level but now it hurts at rest.. Not sure what I've done.. I'm suppose to have an mri within the next few days. If I had to guess surgery is in the cards. I can barely reach out and close the car door at this point. I was wondering on how much down time I could be looking at.

The cortisone has been shown to break down tissue over time, exacerbating the injury.

Its has also been known to relieve pain, there are also non steroid injections.....oh by the way, i must note i am not a physician.... :o

I really don't want to do the injections. There's a guy in another dept that was getting injections and he just messed up his shoulder that much more. They took the pain away but the injury got much worse. I've changed jobs (same job, smaller tires) so I'm hoping that will help to not reinjure when I get it fixed. Hopefully by this time next week I'll know exactly what the deal is.

You gotta quit letting those criminals kick your ass d. Good luck to ya man when you get started on all of that.

I guess that I'll do whatever they tell me to do...especially being that it's workmans-comp.

I tore a ligament in my wrist and that was 8 weeks in a cast + months of physical therapy before I could even move it. It took over a year before it really stopped hurting and now I re-aggravated it. I've had the cortisone injections at the site under guided ultra-sound. They hurt when you get them for a few days, but after that they help. My dr. said they'll do that about twice a year if needed...

Hope you get better!

The therapy hurts like a sumbitch - but thats what made the
difference for me - it hurt like scrubbing a burn with a bristle
brush at first - but as the pain faded the strengh came back

No shots or pain meds - but a lil whisky sure helped

Fer a while I worried about ever shouldering a shotgun again
and even practiced shooting lefty JIC - figgered if Tom Knapp
could hit with the gun upside down and behind his back it
was worth a try - LOL

Good Luck

Post Re: Shoulders surgery
Had one of mine done a few years back. They had to tighten the capsules in my shoulder and repair a torn rotator cuff. The worst part of it all was having to sleep in the recliner sitting straight up for 6 weeks. The pain sucked, but the rehab wasnt as bad as everyone told me it would be. I had mine done right before duck season started so I had to teach myself to shoot left handed just so I wouldnt miss the season. If you hunt and have to have surgery go ahead and get it done before season rolls around. Just do your rehab and dont be afraid its going to tear again while doing it. The main problem people have post op is they are scared to stress it and the injury doesnt fully heal. If you dont push yourself during rehab then the scar tissue will build up and cause less mobility as well as strength. When the doc says use it, use it and do what they say. Good luck on the MRI

i agree with wad shooter the longer you wait the more they have to repair. i know this from expierance i had to have my shoulder repaired and a whole lot of scar tissue removed because of injections. i am not back to a 100% but i am alot better off than before the surgery. i can atleast llift my arm up over my head now.

Thanks guys.. I'll let ya know what they say Brooks. At work I sort and rack 65,000-95,000lbs each night (that's just the physical part of my job) and that's not possible for me at the moment. It's bad enough when at 100%. I don't need treatment that'll get me by, I need it fixed.

Know your pain, this season at the camp woke up with a severe pain in my neck and left arm. First was the steroid dose packs, next was x-rays and then a MRI. Found a ruptured disc causing my whole left arm to go numb. Did the injection, was a bitch to say the least but has helped a lot with pain in arm and shoulder. I can give ya two pieces of advice that where given to me --find the right doctor/surgeon and don't be scared of the injections. PT can be brutal, but not being able to go to work ain't good. Good luck, I hope it all turns out good for you.

Med,
You are looking at 6 months to recover if everything goes well with the surgery and post operative therapy. If its a RC tear and you leave it untreated it MAY get a little better but will never go away. The problem with not treating a RC tear it will eventually become arthritic and you could develop bone spurs that will only exacerbate the underlying problem. If you have a AC dislocation count yourself lucky! Couple of rounds of steroids and anti inflammatory daily for awhile and not over working it. Find a shoulder specialist (MD), someone that has completed a fellowship on that specific joint. If you live near East Texas I can get you some names. Good Luck!

I've had surgery on both of my shoulders due to dislocations from my wrestling days. The methodology depends on your doctor. I think I was in a sling for 8 weeks. But, I have buddies who only wore it 4 weeks after the same surgery different doctor. As others have said, the main thing to remember is follow your therapy regimen. It makes a big difference. It probably won't ever be like new, but you can get it managed enough to enjoy your life. Good luck!
