Post I 9 form
Are you guys familiar with this form. I just received an email from my supervisor with a attachement from the HR person saying the county I work for could be fined a large amount of money for not having employees fill this form out. We have been told that in the near future we will have to provide our personal documents...passports,birth certificates etc and the info will be recorded. I have started a fire by asking some simple questions. One will the info be secure? Who is in charge of this info?
Does every working stiff in the United States required to fill this out? Thanks
Netman

had to furnish a copy of birth cert. at work....... been there 10 years....I told them-" me standing here not enough proof i was born " ! Its illegal alien/terrorist bull@hit. I've only heard big companies doing this. Same type questions arose at work but who knows....... they claimed they needed "in case" of audit ?!

Had to do some of that, but it was to secure an international work visa. Not sure why they'd need it if nothing has changed.

From the hiring side, as I remember there is a large fine for not having I-9's on file for all employees. Never was enforced but I can see that might change. I am sure your info is just as safe, or not, as all the other info your employer has on file for you.

Between my TWIC card and Security Passport for work I don't see where they would need any more info on me. Everytime I buy a gun I get delayed a week because of the Homeland Security inquiries on me for these cards. Fork more government!

These have been around for years and EVERY employer is required to get them on EVERY new employee.

The fine is big-I think up to $1100 for each employee that you do not have one for.

Existing employees at the time of the law creating the form which was 1986 were the only ones exempt. It was part of the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986. "Every employee hired after November 6, 1986 must complete an I-9 form at the time of hire"

Technically since you were hired 22 years ago, they should have got one when you were hired.

Don't think enforcement was that strong back then though....

Not sure if they can fire you if you refuse, but my guess is yes they could.

It sucks, and the last thing we need is more govt, but it was created to stop employers from hiring illeagles...

It is a form that it kept on site in your personnel file. So as already stated anyone seeing the info would have access to your file which most likely contains the same info already. They are not sent in to the IRS, Homeland Security, or anyone else.

I have had to fill one out at every job I've ever had, including when I was a bouncer at the bar downtown. (OK, so I'm only 24, but have had lots of crap jobs while finishing school)

They don't leave the employer's file cabinet unless they get investigated for something (hiring illegals usually). I went out and found the form online here : Under the "What is the Filing Fee?" section, you will find the proof that it doesn't get sent anywhere: "This form is not filed with USCIS or any other goverment agency. "

Acceptable Documents are on the last page. If you have a passport, that's all you need to show them. That's what I use. If not, most people use a drivers license and social security card. The HR lady should take a photocopy and put it in the file with the rest of your HR documents, which most likely contain the same or even more info than the I-9 form does.

Thanks guys! I have questioned this form and have challenged it somewhat. I do have a passport however I am not wanting some HR person from the county to have this info. If it stays in my personal file at the SO I am cool with that. I do not answer to anyone outside of the SO.
Your replys have soothed me. Thanks
Randy
