I need to know the good, the bad, and the ugly about this engine.

I know the truck has been dealer serviced regularly.
Are they good bone stock? Are they notorious for any certain problems?

Should I expet to get 18MPG on the highway? Are there any certain questions I should ask about the vehicle? How many miles should I expect to get out of this engine?

Thanks

I've had one since 09.. took off every piece of emissions crap and get 18 or so highway.. that's lifted with full ranchhand bumpers winch 37" MTS and a full toolbox.. gotta watch the water in fuel system its a PITA. Overall I've been happy with the truck. Its strong and fast but I recommend an h&s or spartan tuner.. any other is wasting your money on the 6.4. Also never put a cold air intake on there.. 6.4s hate them unless its a dry filter.

I also had a radiator hose leak. If you can afford it get the 6.7 honestly.

We have a 2008 and a 2010 at work both are bone stock.

2008- 175,000 miles
4 radiators
2 injectors
1 turbo
1 EGR valve

2010 60,000 miles (boss truck doesn't get driven much)
2 radiators
In the shop now not sure what is wrong yet

Neither gets over 16mpg on the highway and about 13mpg city

My opinion stay away

Forget the 6.4 and get the 6.7. I have a 2012 with 3:31 gears, stock tires and rims, 4x4 crew cab swb and getting 18 hand calculated mixed driving no tunes. Ford is offering cash back and dealer will give you about five off of sticker, so expect to pay about 9 k discount. Very quiet and smooth and the def is a non issue unless you get the 3:73 or 4:10 gears . Remember, the 6.4 is a cab off labor charge on anything other than an oil change. I almost forgot, truck is very fast. 400 hp 800ft lb of torque.

What do you pull with 3:31? A single jet ski. That defects the whole purpose of having a diesel. The point of a diesel is to be able to pull shit. I am a ford fan have been my whole life. I drive a dodge

I have the 6.7 ford and no complaints, this thing is a beast, only for diesels i would drive to date are the 7.3 and the new 6.7 The 6.4 is a good motor if you do the radiator mod, egr delete, dpf delete, and stud the block. Takes a little money but you can make it right and trustworthy, just gotta have a little extra moola

What's with these radiators. It seems every one of you Ford guys is on at least his second or third radiator... :? I'm glad I bought a Duramax!

Just get a 7.3 or a bulletproofed 6.0.

If you don't need a diesel, don't buy one. More & more people are buying diesels just to be cool. When I needed a diesel, I looked around & found me a 7.3. In my honest opinion, the 7.3 Powerstroke & 5.9 Cummins are the only 2 proven workhorses. The new 6.7 Powerstroke is starting to look promising too tho. The 6.0 was junk, & 6.4 was only available about 3 or 4 yrs also, which should tell you something.

Duckduckboom, the 3:31 and 3:55 geared trucks are rated the same at 15000 lbs . The heaviest thing I pull is a 10,000# 5th wheel . Very happy with truck , I have owned two 7.3's and I like the 6.7 much better.

get a 2006 or newer DURAMAX!! best motor/tranny combo, had 2 in 5 yrs and only a water pump at 160k miles, exhaust and programmer and stays at 17-20 mpg hand calculated. CANT BEAT A DMAX

My 2008 6.4 had less than 30,000 miles was in the shop for major issues 4 times. I traded it for a 2005 5.9 Cummins with 140,000 miles and have put another 20,000 on it since purchase. I could not be happier. The F-250 may be a great looking truck but every engine since the 7.3 is Pure Phucking Junk. An added bonus is the cummins gets 19 mpg city and 24 mpg hwy all stock.

If you took the emissions bullshit out of the 6.4 they were a good engine, I smokes a turbo at 6000 miles but it was my fault withe the bully dog programmer. After that I deleted every thing and the engine rolled 109,000 miles without and insue. The reason they quite producing the 6.4 was due to the emissions they produced being deleted withe the DPF systems(the reason for the lawsuits on h& s. my motor would produce 450 hp to the tear wheel or if I was at the track 643 to the rear wheel. I was getting 21 MPH on the 6.4 on 35" tires and could smoke them off the rim on the 450 mode. It was a very good motor.
