Post Not getting fire in a 1990 454SS chevy truck! Help!
Got my dads 1990 454SS with 57k miles on it after it sat in his garage for 13 years. Yea 13 years. Put new tires on it and dropped the gas tank and replaced the fuel sending unit and pump but haven't reinstalled it yet cause waiting on a replacement tank. So the sending unit and tank are off the truck. While i was waiting on that stuff via the mail i went ahead and did a fuel filter, oil, oil filter, trans filter, trans fluid, plugs, plug wires, distributor cap, rotor and coil. I didnt get any fire when i pulled #1 piston and turned truck over while watching plug against the block. So i replaced the module under the distributor and still no fire. I am not sure what else it could be. Also when i turn the key on the radio comes on but dosen't make any sound or it won't let me adjust the station/ volume. Could this be grounding issues or is my main computer fried? I'm lost. Needing help bad in SouthEast Texas.

verify 12 volts to the distributor first...check all fuses....i have this exact motor in a 1ton....some of these models have been known to be wiring nightmares....anywhere from fuse panels, ignition switches, steering columns, coils and distributors....chances are its minor, i havent had any issues with mine at all but have had friends that have.

You should have 12volts at the dist.
You might have a bad pick up wire on the distributor.

Probably a dumb question but did you make sure the rotor button is spinning when you turn the engine over? If you have 12 volts at the distributor but no fire it's either, module or distributor itself.

Another thing, have someone turn it over while you check the voltage at the distributor, sometimes the ignition switch can go bad and you'll lose voltage when you turn it over.

Pull a spark plug and hook it back to the spark plug wire and ground it while turning the engine over to see if there is any fire. If not its ignition, if so its fuel. I'm not a mechanic however thats how I would do it.

Duck Hearse, that model should be pre-anti theft..believe those started in about 96 with the vortec systems. Did you verify that 12v is constant in the start position while turning it over? There is a module on the bottom side of the steering column right around where the 2 bolts to mount it to the dash. The ignition switch pushes a rod down to this module, should be white in color, and makes the contacts and sends the current to need accy...i.e, starter-distributor...

It should show it in a repair manual that you can get at your local Autozone, Oreilly's...
