Post subject:  Great day in the marsh . Moe made another season. Gen 4 flys

It was a great day for several reasons.

Reason 1
My dog Moe has survived to hunt another season. His cancer
did not return after his last opperation. He had two tumors removed from the same spot on this hip Year before last, and two from his chest since last season. He only hunted oncelast year.

Reason 2

Back in 96 I designed a boat I called the Marsh Master.

Generation 1 is the same boat being built by Cat 5. They do a great job, You can't build them any better. They even made a cap for it like a fla flats boat. You are not going to find a better all purpose marsh boat. It's got a trick chine and a pad down the middle that goes into a little v. We made a couple out of kevlar that weighed 300 lbs There was nothing faster with a 25 hp GDLT was loss for ever with katrina.

I was very pleased to find out cat 5 had made a mold of it, I thought it had been lost with katrina.

I had boat #1 out of the mold my hunting buddy has boat #2 that has been in service since 96 with only one minor repair being needed.

Generation two .

I cut the sides down to 14" and decked it over like a surfboard. I cut the shaft on a longtail 25 hp GD. made a special mount for a low deck transom added power trim via a air bag. It was not fast by todays standards but it was a great rig to hide in a boat blind lots of deck space It was as good of a shallow water redfish rig as you could hope for. I cut it down and decked it over so it
it would not blow across the marsh in a light breeze. It poled real well.

I sold gen 2 to a good friend who hunted it until somebody stole the GD. It sat up for a few years. I got it back last year.

Genaration 3 . I put a 20" transom and 35 hp gd on the back. I raised the floor by adding a layer of 2 1/2 " foam. I chased some reds last year with it,and killed a few ducks. It worked ok. But there was one problem. When I designed it the motors weighted about 180lbs and I weight about 180 lbs. Now the motors weight 260+ and I go 250+.

I want to make a coupe boats for my grandsons so I decide to up date the hull before pulling a mold.

Gen 4 is 6 " longer and 3" wider due to a 1 1/2" spray rail / lift skate added to the top of the chine. I added a additional 3/4" pad high. The plug was modified with foam and tusa board, two layers of 1808 faired and painted. The plug has gotten a little heavy but still lighter than most al. boats.

Gen 4 made its first hunt today. It runs higher and is more stable, much drier. It starts in the mud with less effort. We ran Hopedale lagoon this am, it was blowing like hel and choppy. I . am well pleased with the changes, we stayed dry, and handled the low water real well.

I wanted to try a very minimal blind set up. To run faster and hide better.

We made a gille suit out of netting for the boat and grassed it up, We sat in little predator type of lawn chairs .with grassed over netting as a gille for us ( along with a face mask). We decoyed a few grays this am.

We found that the speed we gained by leaving the sit up / layout boxblind home was off set by additional set up time. We missed the warmth of the foam blind and the ease of decoy storage. But the concept worked. it is fun to try new ways.

We will go back to the foam blnd after some weight reduction.

I need a little prop work, I am gaining speed as I trim up but I haviing problems with the rev limiter Kicking in before the trim is perfect. I will do a full review with photos when time permits.

It was a great day in the marsh, Moe hunted for his 7th season, and a solid 6 weeks of work, lots of money invested, along with a missed first split payed off in a great new little hull. I am very happy to be able to leave a couple of these boats to my grand kids.

to top it off we saw and killed a few Grayducks to boot.

I'd like to see that hull again too. I believe there were some pics from way way back but I couldn't find them after the server change when I was looking.

Post subject:  GREAT DAY JD.. that GEN4 boat shaped up good..and ol' MOE..

JD...

Exceptional post...good to see that all your good work is shaping up as you had hoped. Video looked very good indeed....and you let me know if you want me to take Ol Moe off your hands before dove and rail bird season come next fall to the Carolinas, as you fellows down there in Southern LA...don't get into the doves like you do those greys and teal ducks.

With Kind regards...and Christmas gif',
your ol' friend from the Carolina coast....

Thank you Sonny. Moe's got a home for life here. Not ready for a pup . Ann grown real attached to the boy's. I can't hunt franky for a while . He gotten fat, well over 90lbs since he has been layed up recovering from heart worms. I hope you enjoyed the photo's of the boats history. If you look at the transom of gen two you will see the air bag used for the power trim. It worked well.

Still got your spot back by Lachoupe? If so you should be there with the dogs and not posting about your hull. Just saying

Hunted twice, Sunday and yesterday. maybe 150 grays over the pond Sunday, may be 50. I could not get them down yesterday. I got 6 ponds in hopedale, decent feed few ducks. I got a spot off howards ditch I need to go check out. They may have a few birds but the stumps take all the fun out of the hunt there. I turned 60 this summer, I am not mad enough at them any more to work that hard. Hopedale is a area of the past, The young people here will mostly never know the kind of hunting you and I have seen here in the southeast . The ducks just don't come down like they used to and don't stay long when they do. Where there are good #'s of ducks takes a lot of money to hunt. Venice is good this year, the wax may be also but you got to gear up to hunt both those areas. The south west stil has some good spots but the are expensive, More sugar cane than rice now in a lot of areas. South Louisiana duck hunting is dieing because of all the feed left on the ground up north,d the additional pressure put on the birds in the middle state is reducing the # of birds that make it down, the ones that do are smart as hell. Some are unkillable.

Don't worry about even looking in the stumps by Howard's it's not worth the gas, there's nothing holding there. Lachoupe is about it and east of that. There's good days and bad there just have to be lucky and catch it right.

Yea it's sad I haven't seen large concentrations of birds down here in over a decade. What some people call a lot of birds wouldn't have been enough for me to make a setup on in the past.

Based on my hunt tuesday and my buddies hunt today in Reggio
No ducks east of the scooner . They are either sitting out on the bays and feeding at night or they have found greener pastures.
