I didn't like how bright my Benelli's MAX 4 camo was considering my hunting locations, flooded timber, cypress swamps, etc...I wanted a more grey look so, went to experimenting and found out how to dye the camo for a different appearance. It's super easy and cheap. I used Fiebing's leather dye. Just apply the dye to the part, give it about 10 seconds and wipe it off, then buff with a rag. Since I wanted a grey look, I chose the black dye, if you wanted to just darken it and keep the same, you could use a dark brown. It doesn't not come off after a couple of minutes, I've tried soap and water, I even rubbed a spot this morning with a white cloth and alcohol and it's fine. I'm super please with it and thought I would share. I assume this trick will work on any dipped camo pattern.

This is a before close up.

This is an after close up.

Here, the barrel is done but not the action and stock.

Wonder how a Max4 pattern would turn out with green on it? Down south Max 4 sticks out badly.

If you do this, get the darkest color. Do a small section to where its on about 10 seconds then wipe it off, you can do more layers to make it darker if you want. Little at a time. I'm going to put it to the field test tomorrow and will report back.

Here's our test dummy after 3 coats. The first was in medium brown (not recommended  ) and two coats of dark brown to get rid of the orange hue it had from 1st round which has caused a little luster. I'm sure a scotch-brite will cure that though. These pictures were taken very shortly after coating it and there seems to be some lightening after curing (over night). Also an alcohol soaked rag will remove most of the color when it's fresh but won't cut it worth a damn later. Fiebing's color chart is DEAD ON THE MONEY as to the tint so check it first BEFORE you smear something on it that's worse than cornbread yellow

Thanks again guys, did you wipe the gun down with alcohol prior to applying the dye? Bug, a good wipe with denatured alcohol will help flatten out the sheen some.
