| Post subject: | WMA Question |
The guys that hunt wildlife management area(mainly maurepas swamp) i got a question. Do you guys ever have to go through some type of public land to get to certain parts of the WMA and if so how. Because there is one part of the maurepas swamp WMA that is near my house and it is "landlocked" in a way because of the stupid swamp tour down there. Every time I go back there in my boat I get kicked out because I have to pass through a part of a canal that according to swamp tour they own it. Is there any type of law that allows you to just pass through are what? |

I was gonna talk to the owner of the swamp tour about it but the tour boat that seems to always know when I'm back there insist that its a private canal but the canal I have to go through is not that long. If that don't work I'll call the game warden |

ask him nicely if he doesn't mind since he "thinks he owns it". If he doesn't let you use it to access public land then use it anyway and tell him to call ole Mr. Green Jeans and they can come meet you back at your hole in the WMA. |

Probably a stupid question but if you're just going fishing or riding on WMA do you have to sign in? |

Yea that swamp tour. The back area of the tour is WMA and i looked to see if there was anything about using public land and i couldnt find anything. The guys that hunt a lease back there told me that they sometimes use that same way but they're on a lease. And another thing the tour boat guy said they owned both sides of the canal and only one side has posted signs and the other side has WMA signs so i think the tour boat guy is full of BS. And its really hard to tell where the boundaries are on the map itself. |

This may be an unpopular view here. But I think that every thing that could be navigable should be open for it. Now this may get sort of sticky in some ditches and sloughs off bayous that do not seem navigable (mudmotors make a lot more navigable), but that is how I feel about it. |

Go to the LA Office of State Lands website. They have a map that will show you exactly what is public vs. private. |

Where on this map are you talking about? My thoughts in general, if it's a natural bayou, respectfully tell the guy to kiss off....as long as you are in the water. If it's a man made canal, there is the possiblity for debate. |

I don't see where if you are riding in or through any portion of that area from the launch identified that you are in the wrong. Just my $0.02. As long as you are in your boat passing through the non WMA portion and hunting the actual WMA...I'd tell the guy, "Have a nice day!" And go on about your business. Address it with one of the area green jeans, first. Basically, beat him to the punch in the event he threatens to call LDWF. Then, you can say, "Would you like their number?" He's probably worried about you scaring his alligators off and he won't be able to give a good tour. Sent using Morse Code from my not so smart phone. |

Here you go. This is what I use religiously. Game Wardens are also using this app quite a bit. It also works on your cell phone and uses GPS location. Change the basemap to satellite. If you use this and you are within the WMA boundries on this app then tell that grumpy fucker to take it up with LDWF and cordially reply...."Deuces bitch, I'm out!" You're welcome. [/url] |

I don't think it's an issue of whether or not he is on the WMA. He is passing through a canal or bayou on his way to the WMA that the other guy is claiming as private property. Nice app, though! Going to download that one! Sent using Morse Code from my not so smart phone. |

I would bet a dollar to a donut, that is his motivation to try and keep you out. I can't say I blame the guy for trying to protect his livelihood, but, I also think he is in the wrong. Sent using Morse Code from my not so smart phone. |

Well the GW said the canal was "gated" when there is no gate(look on google eath and tell me theres isn't a gate there). He also said the only way into that area was by foot or pirogue when you can clearly go through by boat. |
