 Basin/French history?
I was just wondering if any fellow Cajuns know how "Bayou Cowan" got its name.

I know my stuff. As to how it was named? No telling. There's also " Coulée a Roupet" which means "coulée of the testicle" and was thought to have been named that because the water came up to your balls when you crossed it.

I found this too: Southern Louisiana, snapping turtles are eaten as a delicacy. The Cajun people call them "Cowan", which means something in the Cajun language. That is the only reference there is to Cowan and Snapping turtles. Joan Read more: http://www.justanswer.com/pet-reptile/5 ... z3YBRT5WpR

 Re: Basin/French history?
I'm leaning more to the French meaning as everything around here has the French influence, not so much Scottish.

Found this on the www... Cowan -- "cow-WANH" -- little turtle. Ever notice those little turtles that sunbathe on logs? Bayou Cowan is famous for (and got its name from) its turtle population. http://bryantsweb.com/cajund.html

 Re: Basin/French history?
cowan is the regular snapping turtle with the smooth shell, not alligator snapper...i think. some people, more in the west, call pussy cowan too. here it is common for the elders to refer to pussy as pacon..(pecan). the reason might be that cowan and pacon and pussy are related is that they are all pretty damn good?
