 Rule #1 for new duckhunters
If you find ducks, don't tell anyone. Except maybe your buddy from high school that has kept quiet about the time you hooked up with a black chick. He's probably trust worthy. Other than that, think of everyone else as a spy that's plotting against you. If you really HAVE to tell someone about ALL the ducks you found then tell your mom or tell your dad. Hell even go to your local nursing home and find an old dude and tell him about all the mallards you saw. Sure he won't give a shit but he'll be stoked that he has a visitor and will love your tale.and its not likely that he will tell. But for crying out loud don't be a dumbass and tell another hunter. If you enjoy killing ducks you will find this 1 rule to be very useful. Don't be a dumbass. Sent from my XT907 using Tapatalk 2

I tell people I'm seeing ducks, but only a select few really know what body of water they were on

Re: Rule #1 for new duckhunters
Crazy to think how different hunting can be in different areas. We're I'm at we have duck clubs up and down the river valley and aerial surveys done every week posting approximate duck numbers at various public and private locations. When ducks are around everybody knows. Since nearly all the public ground is daily draw the idea of finding a honey hole just ain't gonna happen unless you got some private ground. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little jealous at times of how it is elsewhere.

Just remember, it doesn't matter what you kill what's important is hanging the lanyard off the tailgate of your truck while ya drive around town so everyone else can tell how much of a badass you are.

Re: Rule #1 for new duckhunters
I had a guy call on the phone while we were hunting one day and ask how we were doing. I told him we did ok and that we got into some geese. So he asks where at and I tell him: Between Starved Rock and Grafton (basically Chicago to St Louis)

Re: Rule #1 for new duckhunters
Agreed, seen a few ducks make people do some uncool things. Rule#2 don't attract any extra attention whatsoever-down play everything, especially at a landing or in the vicinity of your hunt. no facebook, no photos from spots texted for others to share-or get coordinates, no window decals, no camo clothing outside the blind, no bloody clothes (all reasons to get stopped by the warden and waste valuable hunting time when hopping spots, or to have other hunters pay attention to your movements), no loud truck exhaust for the same reasons- If I hear that loud truck rumble past at the same time each morning and see it drive by with a full brace of ducks on the tailgate a short time later and my hunts have been going slow, I now have your spot and your pattern. We go as far as to enter public honeyholes from different places and to alternate vehicles as well as park multiple vehicles with empty trailers at landings to fill them up. As far as anyone I don't trust and know that may hunt or know a hunter is concerned I don't own a gun or hunt. I've had people I didn't know personally, but know of, offer landowners money for places I hunted for free for years to get them out from me. I have seen it spiral out of control over the littlest of things more than once. Also, landowners who see you having super successful hunts start to talk and it can cost you dearly. Be modest with your birds and try to keep the shots to the ones your confident you'll make so as not to make it sound like WWIII. I have stumbled into some ridiculous hunting spots simply because someone i'll never meet unless they find me in their spot, told someone, who told someone who was friends on Facebook and they told someone and now I know too much. Don't be afraid to have a red herring story lined up if someone gets you cornered with direct knowledge. It sounds extreme, but it comes from experience. All that said, my own father who doesn't even hunt birds anymore, is the absolute worst on blabbing every little detail to those most in need of it. I have threatened to cut his tongue out or lock him in the basement for 90 days/year, but have had to realize that it's my fault for sharing anything with him. Rule#3- put the plug in your boat BEFORE you launch it.

Re: Rule #1 for new duckhunters
I got a partner that I hunt with that I HAVE to remind every time we get back to the dock not to be blabbing what we did or where we went. Even if we do bad I don't want anyone to know. I recently made the mistake of telling someone how well I did and now I see his best buddy at the same ramp I am running out of every time. Best to keep everything on the down low!
