I don't see a difference between the duck on the right and the one I had mounted. It's either mottled or black, but everywhere I read and look it could be either one.

I've never actually seen a black or mottle up close. But looking at pics, the head shape makes it look like a mottled to me

Easiest way to answer the Black vs. Mottled = where was it shot?

Mottled ducks don't have the white tips on the bottom of the speculum on the wings. Right?

True blacks have redish feet...

Entire underwing is white also...

Hybrid Black / Mottled drake would be my guess....

Post subject:  Re: Identify this duck

I'm going with mottled. Doesn't look like a black and I shoot them just about every trip. Bill says mottled over black but that is something a taxidermist can change pretty easily. The dark patch where the lower part of the bill meets the face says mottled. Also the eye patch is more mottled than black. These 2 things stand out the most to me saying mottled.

Last thing I see is the beast seems to be too light for a black. It's damn near impossible to go off speculum colors in a picture because the flash/lighting screws it up.

Mottled Duck 115% sure. Its way too light in the feather coloration to be a true black duck. Mottleds can have the white strip on tail end of speculum. Lots of variations out there.
