I'm going to buy an AR15 for home defense and I want it to chamber 5.56 x 45 mm Nato/.223 and I'm looking for advice on which manufacture to go with. I would like to keep it around the $1,000.00 range without optics.

Dpms, armalite, rockriver, palmetto state armory, and sig sauer are among the many options out there that would come in at or under 1k. You don't have to spend 1k to get a quality AR15 style rifle. I train with a rifle primarily made of palmetto state armory parts. It's got a couple thousand rounds without a single f2f, misfire, or broken part. It's nothing special, but representative of a reliable rifle.

I don't have the experience that Russ does, but I picked up a Colt le6920 and have passed several thousand rounds through it, flawlessly. I paid right a 1k for it 2 or 3 years ago. I would recommend it for your budget.

Not sure why colt never came to mind, lol, but I was drawing a blank heheh

One of my BIAs probably has a couple he would part with for decent, I'll check with him tomorrow, too. I know at one point he was wanting to sell his colt. Don't know if he ever did.

But for my primary home defense, I go to my tactical 12ga loaded with 8 rounds of buck shot as it's less likely penetrate my walls and harm my other family members.
But when coons come through my dogs door and gets in my pool enclosure, I resort to my glock 42! :-)

^ much intelligence here. In spite of all my training, and proficiency, with AR style rifles, I have an 870 that stays in a convenient location, a sig pistol in another convenient location, and both my duck guns stay in yet other locations so if ever needed, I'm good. The AR stays put away for when it's time to shoot varmints. And I use that term loosely. The shotgun is a much better tool inside of 60 feet (the length of my house).

Jlacour is right.. For home defense it's hard to beat a properly rigged shotgun.

Stag Arms! All Mill spec components and made right here in the good ole USA. They also make a left handed model.

Buy an Ak47 for $5-600 and you'll have alot more reliable gun than a $5-600 Ar15

Multiple wall penetration is very dangerous for your family members.
870 12ga is a much safer option.

Love my ar's just not for HD

I debated what gun is the best and safest for home. Finally settled on a 9mms. Also 2 sets of earmuffs and 2 flashbangs. I feel safe now

Hard to beat an 870 for home defense. The sound of loading a round in it is just as effective as shooting it. Check out the stock upgrades available and get an extension tube.

Sorry green. If a locked door and two large barking dogs is not enough to say you've got the wrong house. You don't deserve the courtesy of hearing what you're about to get shot with. Just my .02. I've got a bushmaster set up for HD. I know buckshot is a better spread hit ratio I just worry about collateral.

If you're gonna do an ar for home defense why not go suppressed, chambered in .300blk, and subsonic loads. You won't even wake the kids unless the burglar screams.

If you're Gunna buy black guns, ammo, and accessories, now is the time to do it. Everything is reasonably priced and available. I've been stocking up on everything I want incase there is another mass shooting or big change

I said I was gunna buy a bunch of mags cheap and resell them when they are high as giraffe pussy, but now I have them and don't wanna let em go

Just ordered 20 pmags today. I told the wife I'd buy a 10 pack every time there is a big shooting because that may be the last time to purchase. After Sandy Hook they were selling for $150 a piece. If everything plays out the same, with current stock, I'm looking at a $6900 profit. Thanks demorats!!

Winchester lever action 1894 44 mag with my own loaded recipe... a pulp wood niqqer on crack with a bullet proof vest will require some knock down power...

Post subject:  Re: AR15 for home defense

In this day of litigation and over zealous prosecutors, never ever use ammo that is not commercially produced and sold.

The prosecutor could make the case, "members of the jury, the defendant (home owner) was looking to kill someone, with all of the available ammo that one can easily buy, this person was intent on doing evil. Afterall he sought to produce ammo that was more lethal than what even the police use and the police walk in harm's way everyday."

Some may say that's far fetched, but why risk it. One little tidbit that was told to me by someone who teaches self defense... The police and the prosecutors, sure as shit, are not your friend.

I understand what yall are saying but at my house each one of us has s defensive position to maintain. All rounds should be headed outbound.
Abby was happy about her birthday and getting away from a hand me down bushmaster.

Post subject:  Re: AR15 for home defense

If someone is in my house without invitation from me or mine, regardless of where the ammo originated I have the right to do them harm if I legitimately believed their intent was to do me or mine harm. Your point is not an argument that carries weight once they enter MY home with intent to harm my family. A bear trap is unlawful imprisonment if I chain it to something, or torture if I dont. A bullet whether I reload it buy it is intended to kill, and if I use it it will be in self defense which is 100% legal.

Id recommend building a .300 snb if you are set on an AR but really recommend a shotgun for home defense..

BM you preparing for them to come into your house and take you away?
