Anyone ever heard that you can legally have a houseboat in any historical navigatable waterway as long as you are not obstructing the canal? Like if you spud down and do not tie to trees on the land? My buddy said he called LDWF and corps of engineers and they both said the same thing??? I know that wmas and nwrs have their own set of rules. I'm not talking about them. Just public historical navigatable waterways. |

Without actually looking up the rules...I'm sure as long as you have nav lights, it shouldn't be an issue. My argument would be that shrimp boats, tugs and barges do it all the time. They do it in Venice. Park a big ass houseboat in the middle of southeast pass for weeks at a time and gw can't do shit about it. |

You can think that all you want, but it won't stop some jackleg from doing it. Nor will it help you replace it and the stuff in it if someone does it. Just think about where you're putting it. Right or wrong, no point in inciting a local unless you need to. |

I'm sure some of them didn't like the idea of it being there out of principal, but they've always been pleasant when I've seen them. If nothing else, I'm sure they all know that if there's ever a time they need us, we'll do anything we can for them. It's not uncommon for us to take in the entire campground when a big storm blows up with wind and rain. On many occasions, we've provided them with shelter, warm food (plus cold drinks of any variety), and the ability to dry their clothes during and after fronts that come through unexpectedly or more aggressively than predicted. We haven't had to do it yet (knock on wood), but I'll guarantee you if anyone down there ever needed it, especially a game warden, that chopper would waste no time in med-evac-ing them to a hospital. If you've ever met the camp owner, you know exactly what I'm talking about. He's never met a stranger, and he'll give you the shirt off his back. Typical good ole boy/coonass like all the rest of us on here, that just happens to have enough money to buy all the things that the rest of us can only dream about. I didn't mean to jump on you or come off too aggressive. What does piss me off though is every year, immediately following opening weekend, some jackass always starts a thread on here or Louisiana Sportsman talking about how that boat shouldn't be allowed to moor there on "public land." They say it's a commercial hunting operation, guide service, or what have you, having absolutely no idea what they're talking about. Next thing you know, those are the ones coming to the back of the boat during a storm with their soaking wet, freezing cold kids wanting to know if they can come warm up because it's their first year hunting Pass a Loutre, and no one warned them just how remote and subsequently dangerous it is, so they weren't prepared... On the other hand, I've never seen anyone be rude to us down there, with the exception of the former leaseholder, and he clearly should have learned to pay landowners before being an asshole about "his" lease because you see whose lease it is now and whose it isn't! As a matter of fact, the day he cussed me out, it was regarding use of the canal that the new leaseholder has specifically given an easement to the state for the general public to use in addition to the campground. Sorry, I just figured I'd get all of that out of the way now, so when the thread is inevitably posted this year, I can just provide a link to this one, rather than having to explain it all over again. |
