Who around Lafayette has a wood planer in their shop that can handle 12-13" wide 5/4 inch stock to plane down to 7/16th thickness? This is for RangerP's pirogue. I'll have 5 planks like that to plane. |

Call some custom shutter companies. They should have the equipment. |

Dean, any established cabinet shop should have a planer large enough to handle that. Tell them you are making this for a deployed SF soldier and they would proably plane them for free. I could get them done for you and ranger if you were around here in TX . H Finn |

I don't even know why I'm thinking about this.. Just pay the damn people Deano. If you can spell half as well as you can argue a case you should have plenty of scratch coin to finish a boat that is being built for a true American hero. And if your really hell-bent on not paying for it, let me know who it is being sent to and I'll pay whatever they want to charge you. |

Dean I don't believe you need to go to a cabinet shop. A lumber yard should have what you need to get it done. |

https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/viewe ... j1X2QO9sd8 https://www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=c ... =0&tbm=lcl As a cabinet shop owner, I get calls all the time from people wanting to run something on one of my machines. It's at best a slightly losing proposition for me, and a distraction from my livelihood, as I assume all the risk of hitting a foreign object and damaging a cutter or a large sanding belt, not to mention I charge about 75/hr for time plus consumables. I simply cannot stop what I am doing every time some guy comes in to deal with these projects as a business owner, so I can understand if shops around you are not interested. Now if you were to say- "hey I'm looking to trade a morning of teal hunting on my lease in exchange for planing some wood" "or "I am finishing up a pirogue project for a vet", you might get someone's attention. The links above are from google search of "woodworker" and "cabinet maker" You can also google " Lafayette hardwoods" and contact some supply companies that surface hardwoods and if they can't help they'll give you someone who will. You could also buy a small Dewalt planer at a pawn shop/craigslist use it and resell it. Best of luck, wish I could help more for a good cause! |

Dean just buy a Dewalt planer for future boat builds and this project. I borrowed a Dewalt a few years ago and it was not planning smooth. The blades needed replaced which I did at my expense. I used it to plane some 100 year old cherry boards Canuck gave me. I built my kitchen island with that old cherry and it looks fantabulous. I returned it to my buddy. He died a couple weeks later and his girl friend sold all of his goods to someone she worked with. That planer was nice. I'm building slat traps and sure could use one right now. |

All bullshit aside....I have gone thru a very tough patch past few months. Rangerp went above and beyond, as normal, and really helped me keep my cool and helped me thru it. I would love the chance to be able to know that i bought that man his pirogue. I will admit though....i would keep the recipt and claim It on taxes as a donation. |

I bought a delta 2 knife planer and use it on 12" cypress planks all the time. Works fabtastic as log as no nails slip past my metal detector. I didn't like the 3 blade dewalt, blades are expensive for it, where mine there are aftermarket replacements that are cheap on eBay. Cypress is so soft , and you're not building houses, don't think you'd need anything more than a small benchtop 2 knife planer for what you want to to. where are you getting your lumber? Is it reclaimed or some new stuff from a mill? For the minimal they charge to surface per BF to S4S at the mill, that sounds like your best option. |
