I said this after Katrina...it's inevitable...the Mississppi must be allowed to run free in order to begin the rebuilding process...

Tough call you never know with mother nature. Hard to say whether good or bad because the corp of engineers has screwed up just about everything they've ever touched.

Re: Moving the mouth of Ms River
I doubt that will ever happen. The oyster industry has always taken precedence over wetland restoration or human life. Kinda sounds like another MRGO disaster. Supposedly Empire is the #2 seafood port in the US.

Re: Moving the mouth of Ms River
How does the oyster business take precedence, the oyster reefs the fishermen use have been established for many many years. They are where they are because of tides. At high tide the reefs are submerged. Low tide they are exposed for easy harvesting. The big fat oyster we all like are there because the colonies are well established. If they get submerged even in slack tide. Just means they gotta put on a wet suit to harvest. Some people already do. So what's gonna change with the oyster business. They can take oysters and manually fertilize them to form new reefs. But I feel like all that work is too much if you just out a wet suit on and pull em in the water

about the oyster business, yes. I know how oysters reproduce, I know how you can change water conditions to make them start they're reproductive process, I know how to make man made oyster populations. About everyone else's beliefs on how the oysters effect the shape of the Mississippi, no.

Re: Moving the mouth of Ms River
Everything below Ascension Parish has probably been sinking the day it rose out of the water. But they keep talking about sea level rise. I have been seeing scientific articles of more and more sea ice growing on the poles. Why is it a foregone conclusion that we will have sea level rise forever? What if in years to come we have a sea level lowering? And I am not sure that they could not come up with a plan to dredge out areas , say the Lakes to put that sediment somewhere else to build barriers to trap new sediment from some diversions. I think they could also do it without opening every diversion but using salt water flush through pipes or something.
There has to be another way, than changing the landscape on purpose. We have screwed up with the levees and every time government does something massive is when we have problems.

He been watching too much Dirty Jobs. They dredge oysters here. They don't walk on mud flats with a laundry basket and hammer like the old black man on Dirty Jobs.

Re: Moving the mouth of Ms River
Trying to control the Ms River is futile. They honestly should've figured that out by now.. Studies show its going to end up flowing through Morgan city before it's all said and done anyways. I understand the concept of moving the mouth of the river north to increase sedimentation away from the gulf, but why are we having such a huge problem with erosion all of a sudden? I've seen the studies and the articles behind why its eroding but is all that pollution and rising sea crap true? What is the real cause of it for the people that actually live down there and see it disappear everyday? And it would take a lot of old black men months and the entire Walmart supply of laundry baskets to get the amount of oysters that they can dredge up in just a few days

I think that the gulf has only risen something like 3 inches in the last 100 years. I think our land is sinking at a faster rate than that.

Re: Moving the mouth of Ms River
You can call it erosion if you want, but the root cause is salt water intrusion killing the marshes.

Perfect example is the pearl river marsh. The gov has not touched that river system and that marsh looks as good as ever. They haven't leveed off the west pearl anywhere and it's still carrying the sediments down like it always has

Re: Moving the mouth of Ms River
jake you need to take a trip to La and go out with someone who has been on the water for their whole life and have them to tell you some history. For the record the Corp of Engineers has fouled up anything and everything from stem to stern on our waterways. Not just in La. In regards to fishing regulations... it depends on what side of the fence your on. For most of us its the wrong side. Here in Indiana/Kentucky we have been in constant battle with rod and reel fisherman over commercial fishing for catfish. To make a long story short we have new regulations that have been damning to us commercial fisherman and more regulations have been re written to tighten the noose more. Its all based on politics and ZERO science/biology. We have paid biologist who have all these high powered degrees and they have settled on the path of least resistance. The internet fisherman sit around all day at work[their computers] and beat us fisherman to a pulp on their computers. I have been all over the water ways from top to bottom and speak with first hand information from shrimpers, crawfisherman, crabbers, commercial fisherman fresh and salt water and all other types of watermen. Bottom line is we have water pollution, trash, invasive species, fish huggers and the Corp of Engineers screwing our waterways up.

Re: Moving the mouth of Ms River
I did see not any mention in the article of the Old River Control Structure. The river will go where the river wants to go and someday it will destroy that structure and take the course it wants to the Gulf and the Atchafalaya will be a little shorter.

Re: Moving the mouth of Ms River
Given the right amount of rain and snow melt Morgan City will be history and Atchafalaya River will consume 90% of the Mississippi's flow. The old river control structure will fail miserably. We came close in 2011 to the level of flow that would have caused a disaster. I was 1 foot away from water in my camp at 29 feet near Butte LaRose. At 31 feet we're all screwed, anything above 31 feet and goodbye control structure and Morgan City. Higher than that.....don't think anything in south louisiana is higher than 32 feet above sea level.

Re: Moving the mouth of Ms River
Sanganois I did say something about the old River structure. It's going to take the Atchafalaya eventually. So what's more prevalent right now? Trying to rebuild barrier islands or trying to spend billions trying to redirect the mouth of the river in a way it doesn't want to go and will eventually shift anyways? I might not live down there but it's still a prevalent topic to me because I plan on buying land and hunting there and want my kids to be able to hunt there in the years to come.

Re: Moving the mouth of Ms River
I understand that Dean, but I am talking about the saltwater intrusion eating away the marsh. If it takes the Atchafalaya will it just put out enough freshwater to keep the salt pushed out? Even with the flow and the amount of water output the Ms has we still have a problem with it without the barrier islands. When we have something like Katrina come again, and it will eventually, the loss of land will be irreversible.
