Today while checking nets I spotted a small boat being rowed down the Ohio River. I went over and met with Julia from New York City. She started rowing in up state New York and two weeks later she is at the Ohio and Wabash river confluence headed to New Orleans. I gave her some rope and a small anchor. She built her Northeast dory in her tiny apartment in NYC. She took my picture and I took hers. Really nice lady. 20151106_104535.jpeg Here is my chariot. IMG_6204.jpg |

That's really cool ! Did she explain why she was doing that or was it just a personal goal of hers ? |

She said her great great great grandfather started in New York many many years ago and followed the same route to New Orleans. She inherent his old journals and was following his path. She said he made the round trip three times in his life. |

I believe I would have started this a little earlier in the year. Is she camping on the river? How is she going about locking through and big barges? |

From the looks of it that boat she built probably is really stable. It's got a nice deep v and it's really wide in comparison to its length and depth. Looks similar to the Polynesian fishing canoes. And they take those things miles offshore It's simple. get a mud motor. shoot ducks in the face. |

She said she is camping on the sly since she was by herself. Keeping a low profile. She had navagational maps and seemed to have done a lot of studying prior to the trip. I asked about the boat design. She said it was a dory design for fisherman in the northeast. |

No crossbow. It was a small anchor I gave her. I asked her if there was anything she needed and did not bring and she said rope and a anchor. I gave her a anchor with rope and a bundle of rope that was about a hundred foot long. |

That's pretty cool. I was told that my grandpas younger brother ran away after reading huck Finn. His parents got a call later to pick him up. Him and one of his friends made it clear to New Orleans. |

Good on her. I wish her a safe and interesting trip. You have to admire someone that builds their boat and uses it for that kind of trip. I have met many adventurers on the Yukon over the years. Most were in Coleman canoes and were from Europe. Often, their first question is, "where is the next village"? Being a smart a$$ I ask , "upstream or downstream"? The most common thing I help them out with is more mosquito repellant. A lot of the travelers underestimate the amount of time the trip will take and have no idea the mosquitos and flies will be so bad. Did the lady mention a website that we could go to to keep track of her progress? I just did a Google search and found this. http://www.waynecountylife.com/2013/09/ ... obert.html |

Stu I asked her how her family could keep track of her. She said she had something on instagram. I informed her I had no idea of what instagram was. If someone knows how to instagram her name is Julia Holmes. As a father of two girls I would be worried to death if they did something like this. However I would be very proud. I know a network of commercial fisherman all over the rivers. I gave her my cell number in case she needed help somewhere I could make a call. |

That's pretty cool. Last fall I meet an 77 year old German woman who kept a car in NY and would fly there in the spring, get in her car and spend the spring/summer driving around the US camping in her car. She was camping near a boat ramp and came over to see my boat when I pulled out of the water. Very interesting woman with some very interesting stories. |

Netman, if you know how to phone, her, I can meet her to get her supplies and stuff. I live less than 6 miles from the Mississippi down in Louisiana. And a good place for her to stop off in her boat. There is a place where she can maybe even come inside and get a shower and relax for a while. Is that those "formerly" white Guy Cotton Bibs you told me about? |

I've been following a couple on FB under "A Mississippi River Adventure" as they paddle from the start of the MS river all the way to the Gulf. They are on Day 133 or so and just left Gretna, La. Crazy cool to see their travels along the way and the good folks they've met. I'd have to call that truly "living". |

Netman, if you talk to her, my office sits on ten miles of Mississippi River from Mile 171-180 AHOP. I'd be more than happy to let her camp here, get her supplies, crewboat escort through the barge fleet, we have showers on land and on our boats, not to mention hot meals. Anything she needs, I'll make sure she gets it! We're about 50 river miles down from Baton Rouge and 70 river miles up from Nola. 251-583-5732 |
