Post subject:  Another Henderson North Flats Res-Q

I got up at 2:00 a.m. to go get a spot in one of them big blinds people always complaining about at Henderson....my favorite one to hunt during the week. When I got to the launch, I realized I left my boat plug at home. Well, there was this truck with a Gatortail behind it and the driver was in the truck distracted with something in his lap. Since he wasn't paying attention, I reached over the side of the boat and grabbed the plug out of that boat and installed it in mine. I'm sure that guy didn't mind. He looked like a guy that probably had an assortment of plugs for a variety of holes. I also took the key out of his ignition switch just in case his spare plug was filling some other orifice more befitting.....this would make sure he would not get out and ruin my hunt.

I headed out to my favorite Blind Mahal....don't you know, somebody done beat me to that spot! So, not being one to complain about getting to the spot too late, I did what any normal hunter would do, I moved on to the next one....knowing there are plenty of opportunities for duck hunters in Henderson North Flats.

Low and behold, ducks were everywhere. They were going to both spots like Katrina evacuees were going to Macy's with their debit cards. Gunshots were so plentiful a person would have thought we were in the lower ninth ward. His shots stopped about the same time I had my limit..which was just a couple minutes after LST. Birds were still dropping in around the blinds, though. I just figured he must have had his daily limit and was going to take a nap before leaving. I picked up my six ducks and ran WOT across the flats as the sun was just breaking the horizon.

As I usually like to do, I donned my yellow rain jacket and started fishing.

I dropped a couple jug lines and fished here and there picking up some nice fish. Couple times, I got my line tangled up in some brush that looked like somebody's feeble attempt at a natural duck blind...so, I dismantled the limbs and branches and spread them for sac-au-lait fishing next month. Here's a couple catfish I caught on the jugs.

I circled back around to the blind that I wanted to hunt originally figuring that guy had done picked up his gear and left. Well, his deeks and dead birds were still on the water. I could tell there was still a boat parked but I didn't see any movement. I eased in to get a closer look and the guy was laid out in the bottom of his boat!

He was unresponsive to my calls to him. I checked for vitals and he was still breathing but had a very weak pulse. Since I had the game warden, sheriff department, governor, WL&F Commission Chairman, Morris Bart and the St. Martin Parish School Board President on speed dial, I called and told them I had a medical emergency and needed an ambulance to meet me at the launch.

I put the guy in my boat and raced across the flats to the dismay of some guy hollering and shaking his fist at me....guess he didn't have his limit, yet....he musta got out there too late and all the good spots were already taken. Anyway, I get to the launch, get the guy in the ambulance and give a report to the sheriff's deputy. The deputy was already at the launch responding to calls about somebody littering the area by leaving nuisance flyers on people's windshields. He and I go back out to the blind, pick up the guy's dead birds and deeks and tow his boat back to the launch. We took the guys truck keys out of his dry box and found his truck, loaded up his boat and drove it back to his house. The deputy followed me there and gave me a ride back to the launch. As I was picking up my boat, some other guy came through there mumbling something under his breath. I couldn't exactly make out what he was saying. So, I hollered at him asking him if he had a problem....but, he just kinda pulled his little Elmer Fudd hat down tight over his head and kept walking away.

Strange looking fella that had some kind of hat with flaps on it and wearing knee pads. I'm not certain....but, with the knee pads, I think I know why that hat had two flaps....

I got home, cleaned up my gear and went to the hospital and the guy was recovering just fine.

We told hunting and fishing stories for about an hour. Really good guy. Seems one of his favorite pastimes is racing. Says he used to have some of the best burnout routines doing donuts in the track infield areas after winning races.

Just glad I could be there to help out.

Well, I'm flattered. But more importantly, what's the real story about your being in a hospital bed? Hope it's nothing too serious.

I'm not in a hospital bed, yet. The guy laid out in the boat is the same guy in the hospital bed.

Was there any assistance from a barking squealing lab who needs gravel splashes to pick up birds?
