 Glad it's over.
Well this season was a bust lol , Started out bad , and stayed that way Until this last weekend. So Friday night I told my son let load up the layout boat for sat am ( Got a spot that has finally got some ducks to hunt). Drop the boat in the water and head out to are spot and running across the flat ( BAM ) Broke the shaft on the Godevil. Muddy ass water cant find my prop , By this time my blood is boiling over since my whole season has been this way , One thing after another. So we walk the boat all the way back to the ramp , accept for the last hundred yard we get a tow. So I tell myself Im done. Well Sunday I wake up at 4 am with a better frame of mind and decided to take the canoe for one last attempt. I get to my spot to drop the canoe in the water ready to go, I use the paddle to push off the bank, And broke the dam paddle. I started laughing thinking to myself, I must of done something wrong to someone to have this much bad luck in one duck season. Well I make my way out to my spot with the broken paddle get to my spot set the decoys and go get covered up. After about an hour things are not looking good duck wise , so I tell myself ill give it another hour and see what happens. About 10 mins latter I see a group of bills heading to my deeks so when they get over the deeks I pick out to fat drakes (BAM BAM) two bills down so I walk out to get them and my to drake bills turn out to be two Dam hens. Well I guess my eyes are broke also. I hope All of yall had a good one and have a better one when It comes back around.

 Re: Glad it's over.
My season was a bit like that. Ended it with a bang. Literally. We were getting the decoys settled in the boat and my dog steps on my gun and somehow it went off and hit my boat right next to where we were standing. Still not sure how that happened because when i picked the gun up the safety was on. So i found out that you literally cant shoot a hole through a gatortrax and that i have 2 huge things to work on before next season, get the dog to sit still in the boat and get rid of this damn gun. Hope somebody did some good this season! Cause if not we're going to have a bumper crop of ducks next year.

 Re: Glad it's over.
Rule number one: never have a loaded gun in the boat until shooting time and fully unload before moving about to pick up. A dog stepping on a loaded gun has killed many a hunter.

 Re: Glad it's over.
^ all thats true and i figured it out rather quickly this morning. This was the first season that i've had a dog to look out for and until then I never even considered getting shot by my dog lol. Although i realize unloading the gun while its in the boat will prevent that in the future, I'm still trying to figure out how the gun went off...

 Re: Glad it's over.
It's easy Dog stepped on the gun, which 1st took the gun off safety Then when the dog when to step forward , the dog pulled the trigger.
Definitely is not the guns fault, it's your fault for having the gun loaded when it is not in your control Learn from it so someone does not die next time!

 Re: Glad it's over.
Last season a guy I was hunting with left his shotgun in the boat leaning against the blind frame when we got up to pick up birds. I asked him while we were getting out, why bother having a strap on that gun if you're not going to carry it with you? He cussed me a little and we continued getting out. As we were climbing back in, I slung my leg up on the transom and started to haul myself up in the boat. As I pulled myself in, the boat rocked a little and his gun started to fall. I froze and watched that muzzle sweep past my face and that loaded gun slam into the bottom of the boat and bounce around while pointed towards the transom and our knees.
It didn't go off but I certainly did lose my temper. We had a nice talk about making sure you could control that gun at all times if you insisted on keeping it loaded and my little dig about his sling became a serious point of contention.
Seriously. Just keep a hand on it. Not to mention that you can get a shot at a few birds while you're out in the dekes or shaking your pecker or whatever you were out of the boat for.

 Re: Glad it's over.
They definitely let their guard down and develop a bone for mojos and you can call at them with great success
It's simple. get a mud motor. shoot ducks in the face.

Mallards down here don't want to do anything but fly the other way from a decoy... If your lucky enough to ever see one.

 Re: Glad it's over.
Last day of the season I made it out for the first time. Had to take my boy, it was bad. He took one shot at a mottled that was way out of range and shot a black bird. He thanked me 10 times for taking him on the way home. Made all the pain well worth it.
