Post subject:  Job or self employed?

I have been self employed for the last ten years or so and just got a job at a steel mill
Swing shiftand they changed the schedule to 11am-7pm seven days a week with one weekend off a month. I got the job for the benefits which are good but I got switched to this other job. I made more money working for myself but now I wanted less stress. But this is actually a filthy nasty job with tons of hazardous shit. And here's the other thing I have zero debt. I was just trying to get some opinions and see if anyone has went from self employed to working for someone else or vice versa.

I can't speak for being self employed but the ideal job to me would have great benefits weekends off and I would only have to worry about myself. For the last 5 years I've been a golf course superintendent. Had to worry about 12-20 Mexicans and work every other weekend. No time for vacation in the summer and zero benefits. I recently left the golf business and what I'm currently doing is working for family with some good perks like a free cell phone and a truck and decent benefits and bonuses but I'll still have to work the occasional Saturday and worry about what a few crews of Mexicans are doing. I guess there really aren't many perfect jobs out there.

There is a lot less stress working for someone else. Working for yourself you are completely responsible for everything from getting more work to taxes and insurance and working for someone else you just show up with a sack lunch. That being said, the best time to look for a job is when you already have one. Build your resume including both self employment as well as current employment and explore your options with other companies. Just listen to what they have to offer and make a decision. You may be surprised what you hear. If worse comes to worse try to negotiate your present job but have something else lined up before giving them an ultimatum.

There is no negotiations it is a union run big corporation. Your job is your job and you can bid once you get some seniority but to get a job that isn't swing shift will be about ten years or so. It was 7-3,3-11,11-7. Now it is 11am-7pm seven straight one day off 11pm-7am one day off bay to days for seven then a 3 day weekend. Which could change if they need you. They said it could be a year to two before I can bid to another job. The thing is I can make more money working for myself and not have to work swing shift but I won't have the benefits and wI'll have some more stress. And won't work in a place full of cancerous stuff.

I work 12 hr shift and have been doing do since 90 and like it but dont want anything to do with 8 hr shift. It sounds like you should look elsewhere but keep your job till then.

Yep that schedule sucks. Few yes back our plant cut a shift and we started working 8's and was supposed to be 5 days a week. Ended up working 6 and sometimes 7. Thankfully we went back to 12's & 2-2-3. Basically work 6mo out of the yr. If you have no debt I'd say do some job searching. No sense in working a shitty job if you don't have to.

I just took a "rel job" after working for myself for numerous years. It is definitely a big transition!

I guess the other thing I am leaving out is I have been still running the business on the side and making more money more the job pays.

If I could make what I do working in industry on my own even if I was busting balls everyday I would. But aside from inventing post it notes or something I doubt it happens. I started out a shift worker(12 hrs dupont schedule) but I have had a straight day gig a while now.

My job has great benefits, 7 on 7 off and it's on shore ! 300$ for the whole family ( 4 of us ) a month on insurance.

If my kids weren't young the dupont schedule was very nice. 2 weekends off along with 7 days straight off a month. To hell with 8 hrs, I didnt realize many people still worked it.

I work 3 12.5's Sat, Sun, Mon....company ponies up the difference. I honest to God don't know how I'll go back to 5 days a week when the time comes. Working weekends is the cats ass for hunting season.

I've been self employed the majority of my working life. I enjoy what I do. Yes it's more responsibility and no benefits but for me the freedom is well worth it.

I do both at the moment. I have an environmental business and I've been working for the man in the oilfield for 10 years now. I will quit this corporate bullshit the first chance I get and work for myself!!!

7-3:30 mon-fri is my regular schedule on maintenance. Of course if something is going on it will be longer, but that's usually how it is. End up working a few weekends a year, sometimes by volunteering, sometimes no choice.

Good thing about my job is when I hang my hardhat up in the afternoon, I don't have to worry about it again till its time to go back. We have voluntary call outs, but can't be forced. Insurance is a little over 100 a month for BCBS just for me.

All I'd change would be go on a rotating 4-10 schedule with 2 day weekends followed by 4 day weekends.

My advise for anyone is to never be afraid to change jobs, but keep in mind every job or company has trade offs. Without debt i wouldnt sweat it to much

I've worked for a small oilfield service company since high school, knew the owner personally and we were given tons of freedom to do our job. No corporate bullshit.

During this down turn I've had to find something else so now I work 5 8's at a machine shop that refurbishes paper mill machinery. Everything is so micro managed and they scrutinize how you use every little piece of work supplies down to the latex gloves. Some people love the consistent schedule and the workplace but I feel like banging my head into a wall every time I have to write an essay to use a fucking tool.

Been self employed for 31 years. Lots of ups and downs. Never made a ton of money like some people think. But I got some real things from it that I could never have gotten any other way.
