It never seems to fail, every time I go to sell something on Craigslist its a friggin experience...always seems to be at least one WTF was that moment. Thought Id start a thread to see what other crazy shit yall have ran into buying and sellin using the old Craigslist.

So this weekend I put some decoys up for sale, had a few guys interested and the first person who inquired ended up buying them. So I tell the other folks they ended up gettin sold and one guy proceeds to cuss me up and down a blue streak for using my email as a contact rather than my phone number. Says he would have been first if I hadn't "been fucking around with that bullshit email".

Last fall I had a guy call about my bass boat. He asked why I was selling it and I told him that I've got a hunt boat and this was my fishing boat. I was gonna get one boat to do both. All the sudden he starts opening up to me like a long lost brother. I couldnt get a word in. Starts telling me about everything from his kids, divorce, how to catch a bass, how his boss was a dick, why I need to lease a goose pit and on and on....now I dont got a problem shooting the bull but keep in mind after 15 minutes or so he hasn't asked a single question about the boat. He then tells me he's gonna go to the bank and he'd take the boat.....never heard from him again. I guess he needed a therapist more than a boat!

We put an outdoor table and chairs with the umbrella on there, within 10 minutes it was an all out war between 3 different women. I finally said I'm putting it in the front yard an the first person here with the cash gets it. The one that got it left her kid at school (it was pick up time) to get there first. A second lady drove up about the time the money swapped hands and I thought they were gonna fight in the front yard over it, the second one was trying to buy it from the first one but she would let it go for double. The one that bought it couldn't take it in her car and was coming back with a truck, we had to put it in the garage to keep the others from running off with it. I was thinking damn, we need to get into the outdoor furniture selling business.

Dealing with this headache right now with a GDLT.

1st guy wants to trade me a remote controlled airplane (I didn't want to do trades), good laugh though.

2nd guy is all good with the price but has to travel a bit to get it. I took the motor off the boat and built him a stand to transport it so he wouldn't have to tow a boat to me (4hr. drive). Calls me every day last week to talk about it. The plan was to meet Sunday, "right at noon" etc. I give him a call Saturday, he hangs up. I knew then then he wasn't going to go through. I get a text about 8 hours later, "my youngest has just been admitted to the hospital, my priorities are changing, blah, blah, blah". Pretty obvious his wife put her foot down or he didn't have the cash, he felt to need to come up with this crazy story.

People are weird.

I sold a motorcycle and talked to this dude for a couple of days about it. He was 3 hours away and I had sent him a bunch of pictures and everything he had asked for. We agreed on the price and he was bringing a trailer to come get it that Saturday. Everything was in line and working good. He shows up, looks at the bike and commented on how good it looked in person, had a good talk about it and then he says "well I only brought X amount of cash with me hoping you would take it" I said, " We had a deal, take it or leave it." Then he looks at his girlfriend and she reaches in her damn pocket and brings out the rest of the money.

I was thinking what a dumbass to drive 3 hours and then think I would take less than what we already agreed on and I knew damn well he didn't drive all the way here without the full amount.

Quite a few years back I sold a mountain bike. This squirrely kid went to go ride it and gave it hell like he was in a damn race or something. I look away for a second and next thing I know he's wiping out across the parking lot. Got all scuffed up and shit, it was all I could do to keep from laughing my ass off long enough to sell it to him.

I've used CL for the past 7 years selling/buying frequently. In just the last year, it seems every buyer's first question right out of the gate is "what's your bottom dollar?" WTH? I've never been in a pinch to sell stuff, so I've taken a variety of approaches.

A couple of guys I just respond with "what's the most you're willing to pay?" Folks usually don't catch the irony and look confused.

Others, I'll name a price lower than asking, then they'll make an offer lower than that. I'll just remind them that they asked for my bottom dollar and that's all there is to it. Truth is, if they'd just offered the amount in the first place I might have taken it.

A few years back my buddy was looking to buy a shotgun. There was an old man selling a Browning Gold 12 ga for $600 firm on CL. He called and the guy said he had someone on their way coming to get it. Low and behold the buyer shows up and offers the old man less than $600. So the man tells him the price is $600 and I told you this once before. The buyer agrees to pay the $600. Old man tells him, no thanks, I'm going to sell it to someone else for you wasting my time and calls my buddy who went got it within the hour.

Some people just don't understand firm is firm.

Yup, alot of the buyers seem to have this crazy idea that the seller should cater to their every need. I've refused a handful of sells before because the buyer was just being a total jerk about it. Craigslist seems to be the epicenter of buy/sell fuckery.

I won't say I don't lowball for things I'm looking to buy, but I make my offer. If they refuse, I politely say well if you don't get any more interest and you change your mind here is my info, give me a call. That's worked for me on things that I really didn't need at the time. Usually when I'm selling, it's this is the price. First one with cash gets it. Not holding on to anything for anyone.

Buddy of mine had his racing four wheeler for sale on CL. Had a younger guy message him about it, they agreed to a price, time to meet, etc. He met him at a Walmart and the guy asked him could be take it around the parking lot real quick to make sure it was okay. Said that's fine, boy gets on it and as my buddy is saying to hand him the cash before he tries it, he takes off down the highway on it. And I'm talking about a 4-lane highways. Said he did his best to catch him but ol boy was bobbing and weaving through the traffic. Police found it a few days later, intact, out of gas and ditched in the woods.

I love reading these stories

Only once, I had a boat for sale on CL and La Sportsman,
Had a 13 year old say that he was too young to work, but really wanted to have a boat.
Tried trading me everything in his parents garage, and everything in his bedroom including his ceiling fan!

I love it when they wave a fist of cash in your face as if seeing money will entice me to say yes, or say "cash" fifteen times after every low ball offer like it's suddenly a huge benefit that they'll be paying cash.
I drove about 20 minutes to meet a guy to buy an old fly reel in a grocery store parking lot. It was less than a hundred bucks. He was nervously shaking, sweating profusely and stuttering. He jumps out of his car manages to squeak out that I had better not try anything as I'm on camera and there's a police station across the street AND his buddy is watching from another parked car. The guy was such a nervous wreck that he brought the wrong reel and offered to come back in a few minutes. I told him to forget it, I'll just get it on eBay.

I'll skip all the stories of idiots that call me about rental property I have listed.

My standard answer when someone low balls me is to counter offer over my asking price.

I had a guy that chewed my ear off talking to me about a Boston Whaler I had for sale. Kept telling me he was coming to get it. Must have told him ten times, "No I will not hold it for you. First guy that shows up and puts money in my hand buys it". He cursed me out days later when he called back and I told him it was sold.

On the other side, I found a 6' adjustable disc harrow for sale, called and a woman answers and I asked a few questions about it. They were asking $400 for it. I specifically asked if all of the bearings were good and I heard her ask someone in the background and she says yes, new ones were recently put on it. I didn't offer anything less because I figured that price was cheap enough. I told her I would come get it after work. I go grab the trailer and load the tractor so I could get it (they said didn't have a way to put it on the trailer) drive 55 minutes to this place. I get there and some other guy is using it with his tractor and didn't know they were selling it. No problem, I saw it in action.... They unhook it and I hook to it and lift it. First thing I did was spin the discs with my foot. New bearings alright, on one side, the other side was so worn out that the discs were spinning on the shaft and the shaft was seized to the bearings. I figured I could rebuild it for $100. I told the woman, yall said it had new bearings, I'll give you $300 for it now that I have to rebuild this side. She calls her man and I had my hand on the top linch pin, she said we wont take less than $400, I pulled the pin and said ok, thanks anyway. Then she says, no, no, wait, we'll take the $300.

I wasn't trying to haggle, it simply wasn't what they said it was.

I do a few gun trades with a guy on the town who always buys high and sells low.
Great to deal with but just loves talking himself down in price.
Mate bought a garmin 62s off him a while back. When he agreed to buy it it was 300 by the end of the day when he went to pick it up the guy had talked himself down to 150....f it I would have bought it at that price.

Pawn Stars and other "reality" shows have everyone and their uncle thinking they are professional hagglers now. I can respect a reasonable counteroffer, but if you go Rick Harrison on me and offer half the asking price, you might as well get back in your truck.

One good story from CL, when I sold my bay boat a few years back, the guy called me within 20 minutes of posting. This was at 10 pm! He showed up the next morning and asked what I'd take. I told him what my asking price was and to shoot me an offer. He offers me a couple hundred under asking. I accepted and made the sell. He never once started the motor, checked the electronics, asked a question about the boat, etc........ Weirdest transaction I ever had.

The best sale I ever did was when I had a 2007 2wd crew cab Dodge 1500 Thunder Road. I didn't have to sell it but wanted the 2010 Power Wagon. I looked on KBB and listed the truck on CL for $2,000 over the private party price. It sat on there for a few weeks and no calls, then this guy calls and says he was very interested and if I could bring it to the town north of me, which was about 25 minutes. I got there and he said he would take it. Didn't counter offer or anything, I was shocked, had to call my wife to come get me. Turns out he just moved down here and had to get his stuff out of a storage unit in NC that weekend, I guess he was in a pinch. I drove a company truck for 2 weeks until I got my PW. :D

I've sold a number of things on CL and cant believe the number of people that ask if you can deliver to their location. I sold a pontoon boat once and I had people asking me if I could haul it 55 miles to their location so they could see it. My response f-No!

I sold this old rusted out s10. The engine and tranny were both solid but it was just an old farm truck. Listed it for like 400 bucks and had this guy call and ask about it. I told him it was ruff but mechanically it was solid so he comes out to look at it. When he showed up it was this Arab guy in his mid 20s and his mom. They were in a bmw. They go for a test drive and he comes back he says it is a lot rougher than what he thought. I told him I could come down on the price a little but if it not what he wants were both wasting our time. Besides what do you expect for $400. Meanwhile his mom is behind him on my deck saying "your getting screwed". He offered me 350 and I took it cause I just needed it out of the yard. The next day my freind called and asked if I needed help. I asked why? He said he seen my truck about 40 miles away on the side of the road. I got to thinking about it and it was dark and the dash light over the gas gage was burnt out. I had about a 1/4 tank in it. I bet he didn't fill up and ran out of gas. I never heard anything from him or the dot so I guess it worked out.

The last 5 hunting trucks I had, I have spray canned camo paint jobs on em. None of them had jerry bodies or paint. I use them for hauling my rig thru some pretty rough places so the paint and body get dinged up. Sold everyone one on Craigslist. I think the Duck Commander camo trend, has infected peoples minds. Last Jeep Grand Cherokee I sold was on CL 4 days and sold, it to a woman? Hears a picture of the one I'm Currently driving, which I'll be posting this fall.
