 Ar15 bullshit
Is it me or does anyone else think that folks have gotten carried away with the ar15 the past few years?
What I mean is I hear about everyone who "built this gun" only to find out it's a fuckin ar. These guns are like Legos they snap together I could "build" two or three a night? What am I missing here?
I understand someone wanting to personalize their gun with different stocks or accessories to suit their needs and wants but what gets me is most act like they should get a fucking medal or trophy for putting parts together that are made to fit in the first place.
I don't know maybe I am the only one who thinks this this is a bunch Bullshit. When I think of someone building a gun I think of a person starting with a naked 700 action to build a custom bolt gun. I've seen many skilled smiths start with a donor smith revolver to start a bullseye gun or a frame and slide on a 1911 that takes hours to lap in to get a perfect fit that when they're done they don't brag about or suck they're own dick they just say this is something I threw together the past few days knowing good and well there is countless hours spent fitting, assembling, and polishing to create something that is a dream to shoot.
I guess the bottom line is I don't see the skill in throwing some parts together then bragging about it like its something a child couldn't do.

 Ar15 bullshit
Naw I didn't mean there is anything wrong with owning an ar15 or adding anything to one like a drop in trigger or rail. I just get tired of hearing everyone on the interweb and in gun shops talk about how they built their ar. That is all I wasn't knocking the rifle they're fine I've had a few over the years but never liked one enough to keep it long but that's just my personal preference. I was just thinking earlier and wondered if anyone on here felt the same way I do.

 Re: Ar15 bullshit
People definition of building and buying are two different things. It is very easy to tell the difference from the two. Building would require first buying one then replacing damn near every part to your standard. Some people buy one, add a light, add a scope and all of a sudden think they built it. Lol

 Re: Ar15 bullshit
I wonder in a self defense situation and the AR was used as the weapon of choice, if the attorneys for the deceased family would go after you for having a highly modified gun. I've herd when reloaded ammo is used in that type of situation, the attorneys will say you made extra deadly bullets. Wonder if having a large capacity Magazine on your AR, and using a lot of the ammo in it, would be a similar situation. If that is a fact I don't think I should use this as a home defense weapon.

It's not hard to build a ar, but it cool to build it with all the exact parts you want.

They're easy to build. I've built two of them. I'm more proud of the money I've saved by doing it myself rather than buying an assembled gun.

 Re: Ar15 bullshit
Pretty common opinion here that you do not screw with your carry weapon. You can bet the prosecution is going to bring up your home built death device. A guy on another site was making leather holsters. He made a bad ass one for a 1911 with these crazy skulls on it. All I could think was that would go over like a wet fart in church during his trial.

 Re: Ar15 bullshit
It's in every hobby. I went to school with a guy who built a "show truck" from a new short box single cab dakota. He really built it up, infact it had a shiny exhaust tip, a paint matched topper, flame and bullet hole stickers, window tint, sound system, blue fog lights, alloy wheels, ceramic pads and vented discs and an abundance of plastichrome accessories from walmart and autozone. What does building and painting a model airplane from a kit constitute, a custom build? Some people never get any better and are content to stay in their comfort zone, even seek praise for what many view as basic activities. What can we expect from a generation of people who have been told they are special, unique and have been given participation trophies? There are much worse things to get upset about and frankly it's very good for the sporting industry and economy. Anything is better than sitting on the couch. Hopefully, it's just a starting point for greater things. As a guy who builds custom cabinetry and millwork for a living and looking back at some of my earliest projects, I am now embarrassed at what I see and how proud I was at the time. The words "custom' and "built" are about as meaningful and accurate as automatic assault rifle.

 Re: Ar15 bullshit
I have a custom built 25-06 that a good friend built for me when he was going to gun smithing school. It was built on a 721 action, some high $$ barrel on it, did all the woodworking on it himself.....it is nice and shoots like a dream....I need a new scope for it..took the original blued Leupold scope off of it because it has a matte silver finish...put an el-cheap I scope on it just to match finish....lame on my part.
As for the AR debate...there are guys out there truly assembling AR's from the ground up with their preferred internals, barrels, gas systems, trigger groups, etc. Then, you have that crowd out there buying aftermarket "tactical" add-ons calling it a "build."
That would be like me saying I built my Chevy truck because I put aftermarket wheels, lift/leveling kit, step rails and a chrome tip on the exhaust.

The Army taught me how to "build" an AR in under a minute!!! The "unbuild" even faster!!!

 Re: Ar15 bullshit
I like shooting guns. I especially like shooting shotguns at birds. Yes, I have an ar 15. Yes, I have a couple of pistols. But I don't understand these tactical life douche bags who want to be Carlos Hathcock or some navy seal with a bunch of assault rifles and 73 different glocks. It's a hobby, I guess. If bad guys didn't have pistols and assault rifles, I doubt I would own either.

There is no skill needed to "build an ar" you put it together that's it if there is more to it than that your doing it wrong probably.

 Re: Ar15 bullshit
The thing about truly building an ar is you get all the parts you want, allot better than buying a factory gun and changing over half the gun. Now, the ar is a Lego set compared to other guns. try building an akm from a parts kit, that involves allot of tools and work. I prefer to build my own because it's cheaper, and if something were to go wrong I know how to remedy the issue. I think it's good people are getting there hands into it, but to brag.....

 Re: Ar15 bullshit
Just perception on use of the word. Traditionalists and typically those who aren't big Ar-15 fans anyway usually get asshurt over using the term build when it comes to Ar-15s. Usually they're the ones who own $3k custom build bolt guns in some obscure Ackley or similar wild cat that requires fire forming brass. Or they are the guy who thinks a Remington 870 is the pinnacle of firearms development and everything else pales in comparison.
I will agree that the guy who buys a lower, buys an upper and pins them together in 30 seconds is not building anything. But those of us who buy every single little part from different companies to assemble a purpose built rifle. Along with doing things like lapping receiver faces and truing various surfaces and even in some instances doing bedding work in the upper are in fact building an Ar-15, even in the traditionalist view.
Since 2004, when the federal ban expired, the Ar-15 market has exploded. Lots of new guys and lots of people learning with the eagerness of a child. With that comes ignorance. Personally, I don't mind. Just correct them and move on. I'd rather have ignorant buyers of a rifle that is so unfairly maligned than people snubbing it as they once did. Prior to 2004, just showing up at some ranges with Ar-15 or even worse an Ak-47 resulted in everything from "why do you own that" to "get the fuck out of here with that thug rifle". My, my how times have changed and I fucking love every minute of it myself.
