 Boat build screw up
Ordered a custom boat about 2 months ago. Got it in and everything looked great. While putting the motor on realized that they built a short transom. I have 2 options it seems.....have a local fabricator make it a tall transom (unnamed boat manufacturer is willing to pay for repairs) or send it back to the company that built it for a fix. Problem is the company is about 10 hours away. What would yall do?

I would take it back to the company that built it and get them to fix it.

Either way will work fine, as long as the local fab guy does it right. Take your pick. The builder is paying for it, so I'd go local simply for convenience.

 Re: Boat build screw up
Local fab guy is good. I have two concerns though: one is that i spent 700 on a paint job that is going to get screwed up before it hits the water....two is that I need to clarify how the warranty will work if something happens to the transom. The paint isn't a big deal....my ocd will have to accept that.

 Re: Boat build screw up
Make the builder eat the shipping to bring it back to his shop to be fixed. If you paid for a tall transom boat and he delivered a short. That's on him, not you. There will be no question about future warranty and the original painter can match everything up... You get what you paid for in the beginning. I wouldn't just bend over just because of some distance.

 Re: Boat build screw up
I personally would take it back to the dealer and have them redo it that away they can repaint it as well. You paid for a certain boat and they didn't deliver. You shouldn't have to "deal" with the paint job. I am OCD myself when it comes to that. I had some paint peal off a plastic cover on my prodrive the second time I washed it and it drove me insane. I went and replaced it lol. IMO it will be a pain to bring it back but in the long run if you will be happier with the finished product then its well worth it on something you will have for years.

 Re: Boat build screw up
If a mistake like this would happen with my company, I would do 1 of two things... #1 Fix it and Pay for repaint #2 Pay someone in your local down to Fix, and Pay for Paint (THOUGH, it most likely would be cheaper to pay someone to go pick boat up, and we do work and fix paint) ALSO>>>>>> Doing the repair the correct way would mean cutting short transom completely off, and starting over. GOOD LUCK!! www.unclejcustomboats.com

Yep, don't let them weld a block on top of it.

 Re: Boat build screw up
I ordered the boat through a friend who is a dealer for the boat builder. There is an argument about whether or not the dealer specified the tall transom. Looks like he did not and he is going to be responsible for the fix. The boat builder stated that welding an extension and bracing it with a plate on the front and back will be fine. I'm not happy with the situation but I also don't want to be a dick to my buddy.

Am I wrong in assuming you got some type of discount by going through your buddy?

 Re: Boat build screw up
Shit happens. I wouldn't get mad just make sure they fix it. I had a similar issue with my boat and it was taken care of no questions asked.

 Re: Boat build screw up
Got a great discount through my buddy. He's also done me right with a lot of other motors and items I've got through him. We came up with a good solution: local fab guy built the transom up with channel and reinforced it with 1/2 plate. Also got the stencil and paint from manufacturer to touch up the area. Appreciate yall's input. Things like this usually make me bat shit crazy but getting yall's opinions helped calm me down. Thanks

Him getting you a discount changes the situation. But makes sense why you havent been more irritated with it being wrong. Glad ya got a resolution laid out.

 Re: Boat build screw up
1) It is not being a dick to have someone make a screw up right even if he is your buddy. If it is your buddy, he should want to go out of his way to make it right. UNLESS there is some question as to what YOU ordered thru him-not him and the builder. If the screw up is between him and the builder they should sort it out amongst themselves, but in any event they should be working together to make it right for the customer. You really shouldn't have to get that involved.
2) As to overall warranty, I would have the manuf work directly with your local fab guy to fix it like they think it should be fixed and then your warranty should be still in effect.
Take it to the dealer since he is the one close to you and let him take care of getting it fixed (including paint) like you ordered it and confirming in writing that your will still have a valid manuf warranty.
You spend a lot of money no matter the deal you got and it should be right.
It is just a cost of doing business for both the dealer and manuf.
Good luck.

The dealer made it right. He senf it to a local fab guy who did a great job. Can't even tell it was worked on. Runs great too.
