Post Public SETX Marsh?
Just curious who all hunts the public marshes around SETX? Been years since I've ran around in them for duck season but really considering bringing my little boy this year to experience. We have fields in Winnie to hunt but last year was kind of a bust so I want to keep all my options open. Got any tips for getting back into the public scene? Particularly Salt Bayou Unit (we always called it Sea Rim?)

I've only been duck hunting about 5 years, but the WMAs and refugees are all I hunt. I spent time in McFadden, Anahuac, and Texas Point this teal season. Being honest...TP hosted my best teal hunts this year and Sea Rim will be on my early list to hunt in big duck season.

They can be good if you catch it on a day theres not people. I hunted the refuges a few times lasy year and did ok but it just wasn't worth it to get up extra early to fight the crowd and driving all the way over there and shooting a few more than i would here at home.

Yea I hunted Texas point quite a bit back in my younger days. I just need something a little easier because I'll have my 10 year old with me. And I'm not fighting the crowds either. I'll show up at check in time and take what I can get. I'm not waiting in line over night or anything. Just want to show my boy some marsh hunting if the rice fields aren't producing.

My best advice for the public land in SETX,

-HUNT DURING THE WEEK

Seriously, itll be worth taking a day or two off work for if you hit the weather and the birds right, and I normally end up with a lot of water to myself with lots of options. All the public marsh systems can produce very good hunts if you play your cards right.

Not so much anymore since my friend and I lucked into private. But, it's like anywhere, sometimes it's good and sometimes it's bad. A lot of the people, kids mostly, are douchebags though so be prepared. The upside to hunting Murphree is the check in process and therefore typically no issues with people setting up on top of you. The downside of Murphree is the check in process and in particular on Salt Bayou days.

I will add that there are some nice spots to hunt out there. If you're bringing the kiddo, square pond is where it's at. But be prepared, people find kids to get them into that pond and there's usually a wait to go in. But sometimes very worthwhile. Just get ready for people to map snipe at Murphree. As usual if you want to keep a spot empty, don't tell anyone. They started pulling numbers off of the map once the check in is done because of people pot licking. It was getting absurd.

Stick to the week days, avoid holidays and learn to count to 10. Get ready to wait in a ridiculously long line if it's good hunting at Murphree and deal with dumbass kids and people who don't know where they're going.

Haven't done Texas Point since I was a kid and did the cattle walk/levee. Nowadays I'm not walking that far and my boat is too big for Fed land.
