Howdy,

Crankcase main seal blew a leak and dropped enough oil pressure out of the engine to cause engine to seize up. I know this is usually a very bad deal and my expectation is that the engine is probably ruined. However, i pulled the heads and pistons and cylinders looked ok, just dry. I am in the process of pulling crankcase cover to inspect that. Not sure what i'll find in there.

What are my options? Do y'alll think there is a chance i could salvage the engine if the crankcase turns out to be ok? If not, is it worth replacing bearings on the crankshaft?

Should i just expect to order a new B/S vanguard or should i be a little optimistic that i can fix this? Thanks!!!

Buy a short block. Get $1,295 plus tax and shipping ready!
If it seized, the rods and crank are trashed; also the main bearing in the block may be trashed, the PTO bearing is probably worn as well.
Oil pump feeds the 2 main bearings first then through the crank to feed the rods. After the front bearing it then travels upwards in the block and case cover to feed the cam bearing surfaces.
The cam lobes and the piston skirts are splash lubricated.
I'm taking bets to say there aint one thing salvageable in that motor. Depends on the scarring of the Cyl walls you might can bore it, But by the time you buy rods, crank, cam, case cover, lifter, ect... your better off getting a short block with warranty.

I'd wanna see the guts. If the case bearings are ok, the cam, and the crank and rods are ok, maybe he could get by with some .020 overs? If it actually locked up, I'd assume all of that is damaged, but I'd have a look before I threw it away. If you have to replace all that, short block like Marcus said..

 the short block is the same big block, just doesnt come with anything on the outside of the motor...heads, blower housing, valve covers, etc... Pretty much everything outside the case you'll take off the old motor and install on the new.

Benefit would be saving 600$ and using the stuff off your motor thats still functional.

All big blocks use the same heads, intakes, exhausts... for the most part. If you want a short block get me your model and type no and I can get you a price.
