Post Greasing Wheel Bearings(Bearing Buddy)
I just had new Bearings installed with new Bearing Buddies last year. How much grease should I be putting in there for maintenance. Thought I have heard you can over grease them and blow out the springs.

Thanks

First, the bearing buddies don't replace needing to repack bearings.

Having said that, I add grease until the cap just starts to compress the spring.

Thanks Smoke. How can you tell if the spring is starting to compress? Is it a visual check?

Thanks,

The spring is on the outside and pushes on the faceplate into the bearing. When grease starts to put back-pressure on the face plate, it will start to budge a little and compress the spring. Over the next few minutes and seconds, that spring will push the faceplate back down to its seat and push out any extra grease into the front cavity in the bearing buddy.

The trouble you've heard about is probably due to continuing to put in grease faster than it can escape around the faceplate, thereby putting too much pressure on the rear seal.

It's always a good idea to go back 5-10 minutes after greasing and wipe out any excess grease with a rag. If you drive it down the highway without doing this, you'll end up with an evenly dispersed coat of grease on the wheel. No big deal, but you can avoid it by wiping it down prior to driving.

They make some black plastic covers for Bearing Buddies that will help keep your wheels clean.

And.....after you get the grease gun on the zerk, quit pushing against it. Pump the gun handle and just support the gun barrel with your other hand. If you pump grease in there and lean hard into the grease gun at the same time, you stand a good chance of blowing the seal. Let the pressure overcome the spring and push the face plate toward you. Always look at the seal after you grease them.

Be careful removing the grease gun from the zerk as well. Mine got a little hung up one day and I just yanked it off without giving it much thought. About 50 miles later I heard a "tiiiiiiiiing." Pulling on the grease gun had loosened the bearing buddy and I lost it going down the road. Luckily it happened right in front of a Walmart (rare for me to have something work out like that).
