AC for shop (spinoff thread)
Just ran across a deal that I think I can't pass up. Cousin is in the AC business and has installed my AC in my new house as well as other shit. He ran across a 4ton unit in perfect condition that the owners wanted to change out for whatever reason. He is going to give it to me for my shop for FREE! Yes, free, and I like some free shit especially when its about 3-4000 worth of free. We swap stuff out all the time (lil work here for some work back at ya). He's suppose to come by this week to get an idea of the duct work on how were going to do it. I don't need the heater part, but the AC sure would nice in the summers when I'm welding or messing around. Given the shop is 1500 sq ft with 14' eves and 16' peak, I wonder how much a month is it going to coat me to cool this damn thing for those few hot ass months? Anyone with shops have theirs cooled?

I've got a 18000 size window unit on a 30x30, 10 ft to the rafters. Works fine, electricity went up maybe 10 bucks a month last July and August when I was out there a good bit.

Does it come with the inside blower & coil too? If not, I would look into a mini-split.

3" throughout, no ridge vet to loose air. the 12x12 automated door and the 8x8 manual door are not insulated, but oh well.

Stephen, my shed has and A/C...The doors are insulated now, before in the direct sunlight they would produce some serious heat inside.
Of course, mines had faced towards the west with the falling sun so that doesn't help. If you are not in direct sunlight, you may be fine with that big of a unit.

Re: AC for shop (spinoff thread)
A ton of air will cool 400 sq ft. With your shop doors not being insulated I would probably figure 300-350 sq ft per ton.
It would do okay but don't expect to get it to 70 or so in the summer!
Since it's free I would throw it in there and if you want more get you a good window unit and run it.
And if he runs across another 2 or 3 ton you ought to jump on it!

Re: AC for shop (spinoff thread)
That's the thing, its free. And the way we swap out odd and end shit, its hard to pass up. The sun comes up on the front face. The door isn't insulated, but the entire front is brick faced so that helps. Actually its not bad at all even during the day. Turn on a fan and go with it. I just need to get him to come by and see whats what.

Re: AC for shop (spinoff thread)
If you could even get it to 80 or so it would be better than leaving the doors open. It would take a lot of humidity out of the shop.

Re: AC for shop (spinoff thread)
Lowering humidity will make it comfortable. Working a lot you don't want it "COLD" juts 78-80 with low humidity will be a BIG help.

Re: AC for shop (spinoff thread)
Damn, that's a lucky break! Seems like a 4 ton unit is about right for that size if I remember what some a/c buddies have said over the years. If its not too old of a unit it'll prolly be fairly efficient and not too bad on the light bill. I crank mine on when I know I'm gonna be kicking around in the shop instead of leaving it running.
