Post subject:  Setup Ideas for Cutting/Spraying Invasive Marsh Grass

I will be buying a new rig this summer for treating invasive wetland grasses. This is what I am looking to do, please advise what you think would be the best setup to accomplish these goals:

1. Spraying. I will have 1-2 people in the boat at a time with a tank sprayer mounted in the boat. It does not have to be a big sprayer (probably up to a 50 gal tank).

2. Cutting. The plan is to design a blade of some sort to drag behind the boat to cut the stems below the waters surface.

The conditions we work in will be between 8-14" of water (possibly deeper early in the season). We do not have much in the way of boat ramps but can back the trailer into a small canal to launch. Ideally the boat would be of manageable size but have a whole heck of a lot of HP.

I was thinking something along the lines of a Lowe Roughneck 14-16 foot with a Mud Buddy 4400. My thought is that a short tail is going to be logistically easier to tow with than a longtail, but I need a lot of power regardless to tow with it.

Any thoughts, experience or help would be much appreciated! Thanks

Have you considered an Argo? Easily tow something with one of those and even mount a boom type sprayer , which I’m not sure what your spraying but if it’s just shallow ponds you might can get away with a pump sprayer but having a boom would sure be sweet to ensure you’re covering the right areas .. I’m thinking you could do a boom on the front of the boat as well, but you’d need to stay moving in my opinion to be efficient. Only reason I bring up keeping the boat moving is because I know with invasives it could be slow going

Cutting the stems below the water .. would be nice if you could figure that application out. I’ve personally used one of those weed razors (Company in Florida builds them I think) and cleared large patch of cattails but was a ton of work, although here we are 5 years later and they did grow back. They were cut then sprayed, although we think we could’ve easily just sprayed them and ran over them and still gotten rid of them permanently. I’ve also cleared a small hole that was covered in American lotus with a weed razor, but those can for sure be sprayed with same result minus the dead stems sticking up but that has never bothered a duck.
While typing I’m thinking an inboard mudboat could be a good machine to have.
Which species of grass are you,trying to manage ?

Watch last season's Swamp People to see how Bruce did it.

55x8.3=456 pounds

keep that in mind when purchasing.

Personally i would be running an inboard subaru or something similar, dont even want to think about trying to drive a tiller with that much weight in the boat.

I would also be looking into 12v pumps vs gas powered. The diaphragm pumps out now are very efficient, and purpose built for spraying.

Another advantage to the inboard is you can set up spray bars behind it to make it hands free, and will also be much easier to tow your "cutter" with.
