Post Why are snowmobilers a-holes??
I have a small farm in Minnesota. The rules for snowmobiling are very clear regarding where they can be ridden. They can be ridden on any of the 15,000+ lakes we have, 1000's of miles of public trails, in the outer slope of the road easement (roadside slope of ditch), on their own land or on land they have permission to ride on.

Assholes constantly cross my land--and not just straying slightly onto it like ATV riders have in the past. I mean blasting directly through my fields. I have posted it (though it doesn't need to be posted msince it is clearly ag land) with signs I purchased as well as ones that were given to me by the sheriff's office. I have contacted the sheriff's office (problem is they are damn near impossible to catch). They ride straight past posted signs--even went between two signs seperated by 20ft and thru a rope strung between the posts with another "No snowmobiling" sing hanging from it. I've politely tried to stop people as they're crossing my land and they've seen me and gunned it out of there. I can walk to 5 different lakes from my house--1,000's of wide open acres they can ride on. They can legally just ride the ditches to any of these lakes and go wherever the hell they want on the lake at whatever damn speed they want.

It's the only recreational activity where these bastards think they own everything. I don't have this problem with horseback riders, hikers, mountain bikers, hunters, campers, etc. Only asshole snowmobilers. I have to go out of my way when I hunt to ensure I stay on public land. I couldn't imagine just setting up goose decoys in any plowed field I felt like without permission or driving my UTV across someone's lawn.

They are just like jet skiers except they can go anywhere.

Buttholes

I think it’s cuz they spend 12k on a sled and get about 45 minutes per year to ride it.

360 lb catfish line works great on 4 wheelers between two trees, I'm sure you would get the same effect

Except these sleds can do 100 mph plus.

Stringing line like that is a good way to actually kill somebody.

Damn
Everybody has a similar problem of some sort whether you lease or own your own land. The only difference is geography. Varies from state to state but still the same problem when you deal with people.

I always wondered and never understood, the guy hunting next to you could have 10 acres or 10,000 but they have to hunt 10 feet off a property line.

If snow mobiles move that fast "we don't have those here" then the line idea would be a bad one. Putting lines up should be flagged and hang a sign on and later put a fense up for safety purposes. With 4 wheeler issues we used to cut trees down in the trails too just to make it much harder for them to cross without cutting another path. Only way you will probably get anything done about it is if you report it enough, some supervisor will get enough at your department and tell his guys to go write some people up so that the issue stops.

Sounds like the perfect excuse to buy a bad ass snowmobile and patrol your own property

If it makes you feel any better, around this part of the world ATvs or quads or four wheelers and golf carts are synonymous with your Snowmobile problem.

Plenty of people purchase them and have absolutely no place to ride them. Sooooooo, they go ride them wherever they want, ie on other people's property. To make it more aggravating; they turn their kids loose on them as well.

Was talking to a good friend of mine who is also my insurance agent; and we went off on tangents such as your snowmobile problem.

The bottom line he was talking about is we live in such a litigious society people will turn around and sue you for anything. Make sure you cover your bases with this.

Also this is for everyone. My agent was telling me the game has changed now for some time. Be very careful who you loan things out to now or let people borrow stuff.

He has multiple clients who have loaned out big atvs and side by sides to friends. Said friends incurred injuries or family incurred injuries ;and slapping friend who loaned them ATV with a lawsuit. NICE! He was just joking but he said a serious insurance man would put a shirt or bumper sticker out there "Real friends don't ask their friends to borrow shit" My how things have changed

His final advice, unfortunately, is don't be afraid to say NO and cover your butt.

does the snowmobile trail run through your property and they ride off trail through the fields or do they just ditch bang to your fields and ride them across the field. Reason I say this is because my buddy's aunt n uncle had the same issue on their farm. There is only about a 500 yard stretch of trail that ran through their property but it was the same issue every year ripping the the field especially a problem when they plant winter wheat in the fall some years. It ended up getting to the point they told the snowmobile club to get fucked and closed off the trail through their property.

i'm not real familiar with how to detour snowmobilers, but I would think some cables stretched out about 3' high across the areas they been trespassing would take care of it.

shoot, shovel, silence.
