Have any of you watched these interviews. They are really facinating and informative. In 1972 when I graduated from high school the draft was still going on, but by then the US was withdrawing out of Vietnam so I was not drafted. If you graduated in 1971 though you might have been drafted and still gone to Vietnam, as I know some of my friends did. Some things I learned: 1. Those who joined the armed forces between 1963 and 1965 had no clue what the Vietnam war was about. The early ones didn’t even know about it. The major news items of the day were the race riots. 2. Drugs were not an issue in the military in Vietnam early on, not until about 1968. The North Vietnamese military on the other hand used opioids regularly. 3. The triple canopy forests of Vietnam were made for gorilla warfare. 4. US soldiers from dry or cold climate areas of the US had a very hard time coping and adjusting to the heat and humidity. Soldiers from the Southerns states had very little problem with it. 5. Use of helicopters in warfare became the norm. The pilots who flew reconnaissance missions were bad ass. Their helicopters were compared to Porches they were so fast and manuverable. 6. Had it not been for the US superior air and artillery support we would have been at a severe disadvantage. The Vietnamese had been fighting the French a long time before we arrived on the scene and were well entrenched. 7. We had some brave and bad ass soldiers. |
