Post Gar skull
Any of yall fellers got any experience with mounting a gar skull? I've tried a couple but they keep falling apart. My wife shot a good one the other night and told me I better not mess it up. I tried to put one in an ant hill. Failed. Tried another by boiling it worked but then fell apart into a million pieces. Any suggestions?

Get a cage and hang the head where its off the ground and set it away from the house. It will take a while but the flies and maggots will do their work. Gar skulls are not bone like other skulls, its mostly cartilage so it takes a while and they will shrink a little by the time its done.

A buddy of mine has dermestid beetles, he tried one. They cleaned it good but he had to go back and glue it all together when it was over. He said he'd never do it again that building a sail boat in a bottle is easier.

I do lots of alligator heads and the gars are just as difficult. There is lots of oil in the bones that is difficult to get out or they will stain very ugly. The best way I have found is to soak in a bucket of water for a month if its warm out. The bacteria will eat most everything away even between the bones. Handle the head gently to keep as many pieces together as possible.
Dump this water out and repeat again.
Dump this water fill will Dawn and hot water, rinse, rinse, rinse.
Fill again with warm water and look for oil spots leaching out of bones.
If good dump water then submerge bones in enough peroxide to cover bones for at least 8 hours.
Rinse with clear water drain and set in sunshine for the day.
Piece the bones back together using white caulk or Elmers school glue.
Clear coat with Triple Thick gloss, available at Walmart.
