 Re: Spearfishing
A guy that I use to work with was big into spear fishing. He had been doing it for 15 years. Well he went down and never came back up. His dive partner said he looked back and he just wasn't ther anymore. Nobody knows what happened, his body was never recovered.

 Spearfishing
That happens more often than you would think. I almost let a little amberjack (40 lbs) hurt me a couple years ago. You got to be careful for sure

 Re: Spearfishing
I have considered diving on a 120' float line I don't go too deep you hit bottom most places at 100-130' and visibility drastically reduces.

 Spearfishing
I mostly dive oil rigs and sometimes theyre in hundreds to thousands of feet of water. The sharks typically don't come inside the rigs. I try to stay 180 and above one of our guys will often pass 200'

 Re: Spearfishing
Petrel is right nearly all spearfishing injures (that I know of) are from divers doing something stupid ie. diving too deep or staying too long. Spearfishing in the gulf shooting fish nearly as big as you is definitely the most exciting thing I've ever done. Adrenaline rush doesnt quite describe the feeling of being drug by a fish an wondering if youre gonna stop him. Try it once and your hooked

 Re: Spearfishing
I free dive. Usually in 60 - 80 feet of water. Mostly shooting mangrove snapper. Ive only seen a few small sharks in the rigs. Big ones are 20 yrds outside of rig.

 Re: Spearfishing
I was always told the metal legs mess with the "sonar waves" they use to navigate. They will come inside of Rig legs that no longer have a platform on top of them though.

 Re: Spearfishing
Here is some from 70 miles out of galveston. My FIL and i went down i made it to 38 feet and couldn't see out my eyes anymore. I got mask barotrauma he had to take me back to the surface and my eyes were about to pop out of my head (seriously no lie) it happens when you don't breath through your nose to equalize pressure in your mask which most people do. If you look at my eyes in the pic you can see. It was scary swimming back to the boat with 3-4 6 foot baracuda 20 foot away from you.

 Re: Spearfishing
The guy that trains the NASA astronauts and certifies a lot of other people has only had it happen to him 3 times certifying people its not very common. It didn't hurt at all.

 Re: Spearfishing
Well we finally put the order on a new dive boat last week! 31' ameracat with a pair of 300's. Suppose to run right at 55 mph WOT. Shes gonna be sweet. Should be here in 8-10 weeks. Maybe the river will have dropped so the gulf will clear up enough to see fish. Now we gotta sell the old boat. Let me know if anyone us interested in a 30' Mako with twin 225 Mercs.

 Spearfishing
I will gladly post one when the boat gets here and we put a few hours on it. I can probably answer any questions you have. My buddy went down and viewed their facility and went on the text rides etc before we ordered it. They seem like well built hulls based off the old twin vee molds with some improvements. The order process was easy and you can can have em built how you want. We designed all the fish boxes, livewells etc. The world cat is super nice a friend of mine has a 26 or 27'
