Re: Ti's the season for bowfishing
own battery. But you should run 24 volt because you reduce the amp draw of each light by almost half. therefore you getting more run time per battery

Re: Ti's the season for bowfishing
Ohms law cuz...
They should actually draw 50% of the current at 24v that they do at 12v. Nobody is arguing there.
What I'm saying is if you are going to run two batteries anyway, at the end of the day it should not matter whether you run in series or parallel. If you hook the batteries up in series, you double the voltage, but you do not increase the capacity. If you run them in parallel, you double the capacity, but do not increase the voltage. It's six one way, half dozen the other man. I promise you. The batteries will drain at the same rate.

Re: Ti's the season for bowfishing
16 lights@12volt draw 2.4 amps per light per hour =38.4 amps per hour 16 lights @24 volt draw 1.5 amps per light per hour=24 amps per hour
same lights draw less at 24 volt

Re: Ti's the season for bowfishing
Unless you are saying the lights are horribly inefficient at 12v for some reason, but that would not make a whole lot of sense unless there is some kinda of on board voltage regulator that is actually stepping up the voltage to 24 if you feed it 12.
If you have a 50 watt light bulb that is stable from 12-24v, and you feed it 12v it should draw 4.16 amps. At 24, it draws 2.08, exactly half.
Now if you have two 12v, 100ah batteries, and you run them in series, you will up your voltage to 24, but your capacity stays at 100ah. If you run them in parallel, your voltage will stay at 12, but your capacity will double to 200ah. See what I'm sayin here?

Re: Ti's the season for bowfishing
I believe it is your cold cranking amps that are increased by running parallel not the reserve amp hours. that is the reason trolling motors run 24/36 volts and diesel trucks run 12 volts in parallel

Re: Ti's the season for bowfishing
You wouldn't want to run one of those 100+ ft lb trollers at 12v because they'd draw an enormous amount of current, requiring you to run huge wiring. Also greatly increasing the risk of fire. That's the reason for the higher voltage.

so then why do my lights last 3 hours on one battery and yet 10 on 2

Re: Ti's the season for bowfishing
Because you are cutting your current demand in half. But if you're wired in series, you still have the same capacity, just half the draw. If you hook up the same two batts in parallel, you'll double the capacity though, thus the reason you should see the same results. Only reason you may see any difference at all would be heat/strain related. I'm agreeing with you that high voltage/low current is a better option man, just that your math is flawed.

"Connecting batteries in series does not increase the capacity of the batteries; it simply increases the overall voltage to meet your system requirements. Once your voltage requirements are met, if space allows you can double the batteries in a parallel connection- thereby doubling your battery capacity." http://www.trojanbattery.com/Tech-Suppo ... agram.aspx

I swear I explained all this stuff when you were getting your stuff together for your build. And I even agreed with you in your first post about 24v likely being the better option. Just wanted to clarify why.

Re: Ti's the season for bowfishing
So my first outing out with my lights I had them on my starting battery and after like 5 hrs I noticed my lights dimming and it shorted out my solenoid in my motor and I dunno why

Re: Ti's the season for bowfishing
It probably drained the battery. Never run a bow fishing light setup off your start battery.....unless you just like to paddle.

Re: Ti's the season for bowfishing
Pintail.... do you have a cdi motor? I ran my 4-50 watt and 2-30 watt lights off my cranking battery for 4 hours (with the motor idling) and it the lights never dimmed at all.

Re: Ti's the season for bowfishing
Alright guys, question for you. I am considering either going with Seelite Warm LED 50W or 27W smaller lights. Which setup would you recommend? will be on a boat similar to the picture. If I were to do the Seelites how many would I need on that setup? 6? 8? 10?

Re: Ti's the season for bowfishing
If I ran the 50 watt lights I'd buy the 120 volt lights and run them on a small Honda.

Re: Ti's the season for bowfishing
I have a Honda so that might work. See lite said the brightness of 12 vs 120 is the same so I was thinking on getting the 12/24 so I have the flexibility of using either batteries or a Genny w/converter. Make any sense to do it that way?

I don't have any experience running the lights with a converter so I couldn't tell you.

Re: Ti's the season for bowfishing
I helped rig a buddy of mine's boat out with gennys and converters. It's nice not to have to worry about charging batteries so you can go two nights in a row, or worrying about batts dying while you're still out fishing. They stay topped off all the time. He run's 8 seelites at 24v, and a 24v troller. Plenty of power and plenty of light.

Re: Ti's the season for bowfishing
So I have 8 50w 12v LEE'S and am tired of running them off of batteries and would also like to go the generator route, but am having trouble finding a converter, any body got any any suggestions or can lead me in the right direction. I've already sank a bunch of money into these lights and don't want o have to start over

I think most guys are either running Iota converters or Powermax Converters.
There are lots of threads on Bowfishing Country

Powermax seems to be about the best bang for your buck. You can get them on ebay.
