Post cleanin deer skulls
ok,
got three heads I need to clean. They are heads from our 2008 season that have been sittin in our shed at the camp since then. They are nasty and shriveled up but need to get them cleaned up. Can't find any ants and want to get the job done. Is there any chemicals or techniques yall know of that will work well? We want to do full skull european mounts so we gotta get it real clean. We thought of boiling them but I'd really rather not..

thanks guys

ive always boiled mine. its not a very pleasant process and time consuming. im sure there is a chemical out there that will help but ive never looked to be honest with you. if someone knows an easier way im up for it.

There's a guy over here that uses beetles. I know there is some chemicals that you can use also. Have you looked at a taxidermy supply website. Remember looking at this a while back and there is a lot of info, and a lot of different way's to do it. The more natural ways will make a better mount and last longer. Chemicals will weaken the bone, and make them looked bleached...

Don't use bleach.. Use the peroxide from a beauty salon, it won't weaken the bone.

Yeh its fast. You just add to water and boil. It turns the flesh to a jelled substance and most of it will just fall off. Its not a slime like jell, its pretty clean. You may need to reach into the small cavaties to clean some but the jelled flesh just scrapes right off. Then you can just use peroxide or they make a spray paint in white or bone color if you want to go that route. When you hang the horns make sure not to get anything but skull in the stuff. And wear gloves, it is pretty harsh. Don't boil in a pot you cook in.
