 Re: Flat Lake
Just as you come out of Bayou Long? When we were leaving, we scared up a flock of ducks on the mud flat. 2 were greenheads and the other 8 or so looked like scaup.

 Re: Flat Lake
not to get to far off topic, i fish a great deal in the basin and run across flat lake from Dorions to hit the river. I been told that there are underwater pillings all across that lake is that true? I run straight across and just pick that hydraulic jackplate up all the way and roll with it. Have yall ever hit anything running straight across?

 Re: Flat Lake
da go get'er, we seen them last time out there. We went in from the southern end of the lake and followed the bank. It had been so long for me that I really didn't know where to go. On the way out, I saw them, it's like the run from the far south end to about 1/2 way into the lake. I actually rubbed over one. Scared the shiat out of me. They run in a line along the channel. I've never seen them out of the water. However the water is super low right now. The bank in the woods on the north side is 4' above the water in some places. If you fish there when the water is 2'+ higher, I don't think you'll hit them. But they are more in the middle of the lake.
Nonk J or gd16, how far from Bayou Long is the cut to get in the grass? We've been crossing the mud flat. I don't have problems, but my brother runs an outboard and he hits bottom. I had to drag him in and out the last 2 times. Also my FIL is wanting to go in his boat and would need to be in deep water. Maybe we could meet at the ramp next time. We are planning to go the Sunday.

 Re: Flat Lake
I had talked to a guy in a alweld with a 40 yami, and he said there is a cut just as you get to the grass that people been running. It goes all the way across the grass to bear bayou with nothing in the way. He said it's much safer than crossing the flat.

 Re: Flat Lake
Cmiller73, The pillings are running in an East West direction or North South? I'm trying to figure out what channel you're talking about. Like I said I normally run straight across like I'm headed to duck lake and never noticed a channel.

 Re: Flat Lake
That was us that went take off. When we went ride towards y'all the first time picking up the birds, I was looking for one of the two wood ducks I shot. I dropped both, but the male was a cripple.
PS.. It's shallow all over.
I'm going in the AM.

 Re: Flat Lake
da go get'er, maybe Uncle J can confirm this but from what I can tell they run north and south. To the north there is Bear Bayou. To the south is a outlet/channel just north of MC. Look at this picture. The dark blueish area is the channel. The chocolate colors is where the mud flats are. You being a fisherman, I'm sure you know that. The channel runs from the bayou to the north, to the east side of rabbit island. As a kid I hunted here. I haven't been there in 20ish years. So I'm not 100% sure of how far they go into the lake. Right now they are exposed, but if there is a 3' water rise during the spring, the will definitely not be seen.

 Re: Flat Lake
Ok that helps. I just never been there with the water that low to see for myself. I knocked off my lower unit back in october while in the river and trolled from cypress island to Dorions which took quite a while, and during this time while trolling across flat lake I looked for those pilings and never saw them. They must not extend all the way to bear bayou. Thanks for the info. I'll just idle the channel part when the water is low.

Birds were still flying. Not sure how many we shot. I know we left with 45.
It was like skeet shooting , but with live birds.

 Re: Flat Lake
the pillings run all the way across the lake but in the middle are 4 tall pillings close together and you gotta go through the 2 sets to be in the clear... if you go in between those 4 pillings then you have nothing to worry about but i just ran across yesterday in the prodrive and thought i would see them all cause of how low the water is but i ended up hitting one but it wasnt a big deal but if it was in an outboard it would have either broke the lower off or the motor would have been in the boat with us..

 Re: Flat Lake
I'm surprised I havnt hit anything out there! I'm gonna spend some time out there looking for them so i can mark them on GPS and just slow down when i get close. Last year my lower unit went out by cypress island in the river so I trolled from there to Dorions. I never did see these pilings but I wasnt really looking for them. Thanks for the heads up.

So I brought my dad out to Flat Lake this morning. He enjoyed himself. 2 man limit of coots by 6:45. Saw some ducks early on before shooting time.

 Re: Flat Lake
That was a nice little pile of coots you had this morning. We ended up with one limit and one of those elusive "Flat Lake Mallards" My daughter had fun other than waking up at 3:00 AM. I let her take the first shot on most of them.

 Re: Flat Lake
I was shooting really well. Can't wait to take my girl when she gets old enough.
I may head back Tuesday, but it is supposed to rain. Want to see if I can get some ducks without all the weekend shooting.

 Re: Flat Lake
I don't know if it has anything to do with my shooting today but I was using 2/34" #4. I shot about a box of shells for 15 coots and one duck. That was a HUGE improvement from our previous trips.
I may go back out tomorrow morning.

Where were you guys at? We hunted the east side of the channel, then moved and hunted out on the west side. Was that you 2 sitting out in the open BS'n out by Uncle J's blind? Me and my son moved into that area after daylight.
