Post subject:  Advice on AR
Been wanting to buy an AR. Wanting to get something that I could change out the upper on so I could shoot different calibers now and then. Don't know much about them, are some brands easier to customize than others. Appears that the prices vary quite a bit from brand to brand. Just looking for a little feedback.....thanks

Yeah I started building me one-- but I stopped basically there's to many options for me to settle one right off the bat.

Rumor has the new 30 Ar round is the cats meow!
Customizing there's more goodys for AR's than women folk can have shoes
Prices seem to be coming down a bit--brother in law bought him a 16 inch A3 Dpms last weekend at the gun show 750 out the door!

Just MO but I would stay far away from anything that is not mil-spec. About the only exception would be a high quality match barrel if that's what you want. As for brands I would stick to LMT, BCM, Colt, Daniel Defense, or Spike's Tactical.

I've had very good experiences with Armalite. I have an AR-15 with a Carbine upper and a Match upper. I also have an AR-10 with a match upper. Both rifles have had thousands of rounds through them in matches and have functioned flawlessly. Both have moa accuracy out of the box with Black Hills Ammo and worked up reloads.

Two of my buddies have Les Baers and are very pleased with them. Both are sub moa rifles built for varminting/predator hunting. They are pricey and take some time to get, but appear to be worth it.

If you want reliable accuracy, you will need to spend a little more money. If you just want to scorch through cases of Wolf ammo, go cheap.

Make sure you budget for a good trigger job and glass appropriate for what you plan to do with the rifle.

Purchasing and becoming proficient with an AR-15 is time well spent.

If you want to save a good bit of $ build it. Just stick with mil spec parts. If you're buying a complete rifle, any of the big brand names are suitable. I have all colts, but RR's, LMT and all the others mentioned by Nathan and others are fine. Keep the gun clean and shoot decent ammo and you shouldn't have any problems.

I have a Rock River and very pleased with it. But i only have about 400 rounds through it. Only time will tell. About all i know it you get what you pay for. And dont shoot steel cased shells through a RR.

I wouldn't shoot any steel casings through an AR. They have a laquer on the casings that will gum up the gun eventually and will cause problems with extraction and double feeds.

I shoot American Eagle and Hornady TAP and both are very clean shells.
