Went to the gun shop today and ordered a Ruger Super Redhawk in .454 Casull with a 7.5" barrel but I've never shot one. Any of you guys have one and if you do, what do you think of it? How's the recoil on that sucker? I load all my own stuff so I'll probably start off with some lite loads before I make some fire breathers but I can't wait to take it on a hog hunt with me! |

kicks bad and loud I got the new taurus that shots 410,45 colt and .454 and you only use the 454 for hogs or elephants. |

Shot one when I was wheel gun shopping. Glad I went with .44, it was too much recoil to be fun to shoot. Load up some lead cast bullets over a +p powder charge and kill any hog you shoot at with the first shot. .454 is overkill for hogs. |

I did have the 454 but I did have the ruger super redhawk in .480. Lot of recoil but well worth it. I went with the 9 inch barrel for a little more accuracy. |

I've got a S&W 460, and its not bad at all in the recoil department with either .454's or .460's, better double up on your ear pro though, 'cause that is one loud mother with the muzzle brake! Don't forget that you can shoot .45 LC loads out of it too. |

Richard, do you wear hearing protection when you go hunting with it? The SRH doesn't have a muzzle break but I'm sure it'll still be load as heck. |

Yes, I wear hearing protection all the time when hunting, ducks/deer/doves, etc... I bought some Howard Leight Impact Sport electronic muffs from academy for about $60, worth every penny. For hunting, they work fine, especially with the sound amplification (can hear ducks way before you see em), but when I target shoot the big toys, I use plugs and the muffs. |

Cant, I have a Marlin 1895 XLR in .45/70 and it's by far one of my favorite rounds. I'm using IMR 4198 powder and have a load that give me 1" groups at 100 yards that carries over 3500 ft/lbs of energy at the muzzle. Now that's stopping power! |

you can load all the FIRE BREATHERS you want, but you will only need one, lol the rest will turn green in a sock drawer somewhere. I have 6 different 44 mags, and anything it wont kill, nothing else is gonna kill either. 454 is good choice, but load em light, P.S. YOU WILL THANK ME LATER |

I shot one with porting. It wasn't that bad with a brake. Ear plugs are a must like mentioned above. Port that biatch so it will be bearable. |

When first got it I could only handle about six rounds through it before I would put it down for a little while. now I can shoot a couple doxen in it no problem. It takes getting use to. But the nice thing is to shoot .45 LC through it like its a .22. and you can reload them to lighter loads if you like. I love shooting it and have been shooting it for a few years. reloading is the key to shooting it sheap and reloading its light to keep recoil managable. |

Just think I have a S and W 460 magnum revolver. I can shoot 460, 454 and 45 colt through it. Guys say shoot the 45 colt or 454 for lughter recoil. I have yet to shoot it. I bought it from a guy who needed some money. I will take 1000.00 bucks for it if you are interested. I will be in La gator hunting next week if interested. Randy |

Jimmy, how far do you feel comfortable taking a deer with a handgun? I got my Super Redhawk yesterday and haven't had a chance to shoot it yet but I like the way the gun looks and feels. I'll the reloading stuff arrives on Thursday so I'll be shooting it sometime this weekend. |

Myself,I like to shoot them up to 75 yards if I am in a shooting house with sandbags but that all depends on the shooter.Good luck and you will love it! |

Well, I picked up my Super Redhawk on Monday and got the scope in yesterday. I'm planning to get out to the range this weekend and hopefully do some hog hunting the next. |

Nice pistol. I've shot a Super Redhawk in .454 and .480 Ruger. I own a Magnum Research BFR in .460. I'm a big fan on the big bore pistols....they are fun to shoot! Good choice on the scope, btw. Most of the cheaper scopes won't hold up to the recoil. |

Well, shot the gun today with some factory loads and the recoil was definitely stout. Let my buddy shoot it and he nailed himself in the forehead with it! Luckily he didn't drop the gun but he left the range with the front sight engraved on his forehead! The 454 hits hard on both ends, that's for sure. |

I've now had the gun about three weeks and I think it's awesome. I've pretty much gotten used to the recoil which isn't that bad now and the best thing about it is that my .45 now feels like a cap gun. I swear I've never been able to control a handgun as good as I do now. It's like they don't even move anymore! |
