I see a lot of descriptions on duck call manufacturers websites describing their calls like:

"Has a nappy-ass top end with a nasty middle and some serious junk-in-the-trunk"

WTF does "nasty" mean when describing a duck call!??

I think it could describe the raspiness of it. But then again, I'm not a great caller and don't have many high end calls.
I got a R & T Daisy Cutter for Xmas, and it's raspy. Many would call that nasty, possibly.

Kinda like beer makers talking about their beer....smooth,full body, perfect bitterness, hops from a field in arizona...WTH If you read the description of Keystone beer you would thing they are selling you a beer only Arabian oil barons drink.

Unfortuantely many of the new call makers use catchy lingo and graphics to make up for what they lack, like an original tone board... Too many of them use an Echo Poly Insert and put it into an awesome looking barrel, but sell it because people think they look cool.

I prefer an Arkansas style toneboard, myself. The Louisiana floating style toneboards are great to learn on (Faulks and Haydels), but are very limiting in tone and cadence through all the ranges.

I personally believe that Rick Dunn at Echo is one of the greatest call makers and runs a stand-up, humble company. Their products speak for themselves and they won't lure you in with all the fluff newer companies will.

If you like a single reed, I would recommend the Echo XLT or the new Breaker. The Timber is also great if you are looking for a quieter call. If you like a double reed the DRT is a great one as well, and more forgiving by nature.

I'm not sure where you primarily hunt, but that determines what kind of call you should use as well. Are you hunting marsh, open water or timber? You're in New Iberia so I would assume marsh and swamps.

easiest call to work through all ranges is the sure shot, hands down.....it has no style, is kinda ugly but still the easiest to call with......I use an old world champion rnt 2 , a zinc power hen poly and a foiles timber rattler....all have been retuned for the way i like them to sound, made the rnt and foiles into single reeds, prolly go back to a double reed in the foiles because the reed sticks too easily. Ive got a bunch of other calls that tend to cycle through my lanyard, it depends on my mood i guess. Any of the terms you are hearing, "dirty" "nasty" etc...is the raspyness of the call....having said that, you may not be able to produce a good sound at first, some of those really raspy calls take the right kinda pressure to blow, until you get that right it will most likely sound like shit. But if you are a caller, you will get the hang of it quickly. If not, you may never get it to sound good.

Ive got a range of calls from Triple reed to single. I have finally gotten the hang of all of them after about 2 years of practicing. It takes time, and alot of practice. You will get it eventually though.. stick with the same calls to use in different situations and master how to blow them and you should be fine,

buy a couple of cheap calls and work on tuning them, it will help when you decide to buy a more expensive call........
