I'm looking to buy another spin cast rod/reel combo. I currently have 2 spin cast combo's on falcon rods including a few open face reels on falcon rods. What do yall recomend as a good overall saltwater spin cast combo ? I'm wanting to keep it under 400$ I'm thinking a cast away rod maybe the Line tamer http://www.castawayrods.com/collections ... -drop-shot . Just not sure !! Any ideas ? |

Not sure about that particular rod, but I heard castaways quality went down hill. Why don't you get another Falcon? |

I have no input on spin cast. All I use is bait cast. Fyi you can get new reels pretty cheap on eBay compared to the stores. Especially if you buy last year's model. |

Ok cool thank you. I love to use spin cast for those days the wind is just ripping and it's just easier to pitch a spin cast ! I like both and have both just would like another spin cast. I'll be getting another open face soon as well but I all ready know what I want. |

If u are going to be the only one using it, find a good rod builder and get a custom rod built. As far as reels go, I have had problem with all of them, right now if having good service with PENN reels, the Conflict seems like it is a good reel, I would stay with high end reels from PENN, Shimano or Daiwa. |

Why don't you go to a tackle shop and try them out? It's going to come down to your personal preference anyways. I can put up with damn near anything for a spinning rod. Baitcast I'm a little more picky, but still not that bad. With fly rods I am absolutely stubborn and will spend weeks picking out a new rod. Nobody tells me which one to get in any of the cases though. I go play with them and if they make me happy and the sticker doesn't make me too sad, then I get it. |

A $400 combo gives you a ton of options. Shimano or Diawa would be my choices for sure on reels. I have a TFO rod that I really like. Have had really good luck with the Redbone rods and they are reasonably priced. Waterloo makes nice stuff but they are pricey. I rarely have a problem finding a good rod for under $150 which leaves you enough to get into the better quality reels which hold up better in the long run. |

Ive got a Stradic ci4 3k on a carrot stick and absolutely love how light and balanced the combo is. Also have a quantum smoke inshore 3k on a 7ft tsunami air wave thats tough to beat. If you want light and sensitive go with the ci4 carrot stick combo |

Spin cast or spinning reel? There is a major difference.... |

Post subject: | Re: ideas for a new saltwater spin cast combo ? |
The pflueger patriarch and the Abu revo sx are quite nice and hold up to saltwater. The Shimano stradic is as well, but you've already had that recommended I tend to stay under 100 for rods because I fairly regularly wind up with broken tips due to my or fishing partner clumsiness. Attrition gets at least one of my rods every year. So I won't recommend any rods since I don't use the higher end stuff. |

Post subject: | Re: ideas for a new saltwater spin cast combo ? |
Yes. Mentioned that one. It's an excellent reel. I'm a bit of a brand guy (I love Abu and pflueger as they've never let me down). As I age, and have as little more money to spend on things, I've tried various brands of reels, and continue to try more, but keep picking up those and use them most. Shimano is always a safe bet, and that stradic is sweet, but I still prefer the revo sx and the patriarch. Familiarity, I reckon. I haven't put a lot of years on either, but I have on plenty of older pfluegers and abus. I find this generation of the Abu Garcia reels much better than 5+ years ago, and the cheaper pfluegers I had always had paint issues with a lot of use. But the higher end ones never suffered the same problems with paint staining from water or wearing from a lot of use. |

Check out Swampland Tackle in Houma. Mr. Lance builds some first class rods and his prices for a rod similar to the Castaway you mentioned start around $175. I know you said you didn't like Penn but their Battle line of reels are nice. I haven't had any problems with any of the ones I've used. I still prefer my older US Reels Supercaster but their quality has gone to shit which is why its become so hard to find them anywhere. |

Go to Simon outfitters in Orange and try out the Sarge rods then get on 2coolfishing and buy a slightly used reel for half the price of a new one. |
